After a month of often subzero and always below freezing weather, we finally got a series of days where the temperature has been high enough to keep the ice build-up on the rod tip to a minimum. And not a day too soon either. The cabin fever was getting so bad that I was resorting to chasing my mutt around the woods while wearing snowshoes. (I was wearing the snowshoes most of the time). Sunday I was able to get out to the trout streams for the first time in 2011, and in spite of the banks being piled high with drifted snow and ice, it felt great to be back in rubber pants. The day was sunny with temperatures in the high 30’s, and a wind blowing about 20 mph, but I was down between the bluffs fishing the Whitewater River, so the wind was of little concern. The water was 36 degrees, at normal level and very clear. Whitewater is one of many rivers that Minnesota allows winter trout fishing starting on the first of January and going on until spring. The special season has regulations mandating “catch and release and barbless hooks”. It was 1:15 when I stepped off the bank and into the water.

I started out throwing a Twist-less One-der bow spinner and stayed married to it the whole outing. There was no reason to change.

The high banks covered with deep snow and protruding ice ledges made fishing from the bank very difficult to almost impossible. I have found that, although it may not look it, wading is the easiest and most comfortable way to chase winter trout. Most years early winter fridged finger fishing is more or less a good excuse to get outdoors, enjoy the great scenery and if I land a fish or two, well that’s a nice bonus. Today though, was an exception, and even though the water was very clear and very cold, conditions that normally result in zero production, my first cast was followed out of the depths of a dark pool by a shadow, indicating the start of another fun outing. Four casts later I was releasing my first trout of 2011.

The rest of the day went very well; I would wade and cast for a while and than come upon some structure or pool that would yield a fish on almost every cast and than another stretch of wading followed by a flurry of action.

I stepped out of the water at 4:30 with a total count of 18 trout caught and released, an average of 1 trout every 10 minutes. All fish were heavy and ranged from 12” to about 17” in length.

The new style single hook worked almost to perfection, even being barbless, all but one fish that grabbed the TWIST-Less spinner was easily landed.

Well that about sums it up for now, a great start to another year of wade fishing.

Awesome! I got excited (and I will admit somewhat envious) just looking at the pictures! I love trout and trout fishing! Those trout look very healthy and they were big! It must have been hard letting all of them go. I would have wanted to take a couple home to fry up, but the law is the law. We all need to respect the fishing laws in our respective states and practice conservation. Looks like you had some fun, despite the weather! Im sure all anglers can agree though, spring cannot come soon enough!

    Right on!
While I don't have any problem returning fish, particularly the big ones, I don't like getting on a soapbox about C/R. I like to set a personal slot limit of 11" to 13" and carry a camera and ruler.
I have found that trout that fit in this bracket fillet well, fit great in the pan, and seem to be less oily and more flavorful.
Most of the trout caught on this outing went a little over my slot, but if it were leagle I probably would have fudged a little for some early spring trout fillets.

Really appreciate the documetary on your outing.  Very nic pics and story.  Cold weather fishing can be nice and it's good you found a "go to" spinner so you weren't  having to tie up a bunch of different rigs with numb fingers.

Well, my point was without conservation there wouldn't be any trout for you to catch! But I enjoyed the pictures. Looking forward to the next ones you post.

Great story and pics spindoctor. I think this time of year is great to get out and not have to worry about someone dropping in next to you.

Thanks so much for all the cool pics spindoctor! Cabin fever has definitely gotten its hook in me this winter also. The only bad thing is we had some pretty big snows and a recent warmup along with a big rain has rendered the trout streams in this area unwadeable. I'll just have to wait a bit longer but thats ok. Maybe I have time to check out your website and acquire a few of those spinners you've made! Thanks again and welcome to the club, btw.

Beautiful pictures. Congratulations...and you caught all of them with the same spinner! This is one reason I would consider moving from sunny So Cal to Mn., just for the lakes and the trout!

While chasing trout through snow and ice can be fun and pretty, I think that I would trade a good portion of it for some Ca. sunshine and a little bit of green.
Man! I can hardly wait for spring!
We will have a booth at the upcomming Sportsmen Show comming to Sioux Falls SD. this weekend, if you're in the area stop by and see our spinners and take advantage of our great show deals.
    Thanks guys!
    Hope to see you there.

I just made an order at eggersspinners. I'm looking forward to trying them out. They look like some quality stuff spindoctor, I'll let you know how I like em. Maybe I just didn't scroll down far enough at your site, but do you have any sample combo type deals? Good fishing my friend!

    Thanks much!
I developed them about ten years ago to win bets with my buddies, and used them exclusively as a tool in my Guide service.
Since than I have been constantly making inprovements. This year I have added the twist-less style and a single hook that I make right here in my shop. You can get these spinners barbless as well.
I try to keep all componants American made.
