Several years ago, at the Fred Hall fishing tackle and boat show in Del Mar, one of the products I looked at was a stretchy thread just for tying deadbaits to hooks and lures, now I am trying to figure out what the product was so I can get some for my kid for his catfishing.  Any ideas?  Tahnks

For channel cat fishing I use frozen squid. It is very tough and stays on the hook until you take it off Give that a try. I caught my pb channel last year on squid.

    AZ,
I beleive the product you're looking for is called Wonder Thread.  It's basiclly a single strand of elastic thread.  We use it to wrap sardine fillet chunks to our big Kwikfish for Salmon fishing.  You can also find instructions on tieing a bait loop with your leader.  Similar to a snell, but with a loop about half way which you can wrap a couple times around the bait and cinch dow tight.

Tieing a bait loop.  This is a 6/0 hook and 20# leader so you can see it.

Start by running leader through hook eye and leaving an inch or two over the hook shank.

Wrap long end of leader over tag end several times.

Feed leader back through hook eye and pull out slack to leave a loop.

Hold wraps tight, loop in your other hand, go over hook shank and leader that is back through eye.  Do this several times, keeping everything as tight as you can.

Pull tight from behind the eye.

When you push the leader back through the eye, a loop is formed.

A peice of yarn can be tied on to the loop.  This will help get the loop opened and the yarn will tend to stick in a fishes teeth.  Trim short.  We use a half of strand and clip to about 1/2" on each end.

I hope this doesn't confuse you too much.

If you have trouble finding the Wonder Thread, let me know and I can pick some up and send to you.  It runs a couple bucks a spool and all the tackle shops in our area carry it.

Very effective when using cured Salmon eggs, Sand Shrimp, or any other bat that tends to fall off the hook easily.  I use it for Salmon, Steelhead, and fishing off the jetties down at the coast.  Sand Shrimp are pretty soft and will only stay on the hook for a cast or two if not tethered.  You put them on the hook, wrap the loop around them a couple times and pull it tight.  For Salmon, we'll use a pretty big clump of eggs and Sand Shrimp and wrap the whole mess.  We'll get easily ten casts and drifts if a fish doesn't take it first.

Justdave, I think all of us here in the NW learned to tie that bait holding
tie. I was taught when I was 10 years old.I have posted pics of spinners
I have been making for 40 years. on my profile page. I use them for Kings If we allowed to
fish for them and Silvers (Cohos) Simple but effective.

Good looking spinners, fish, and fillets.  I use the bait loop for so many types of fishing it is just second nature to tie one up on the water.  It's a little different when you're trying to take pictures as you go.  About time to start chasing Springers down this way.  We'll have to get together and put some meat in the freezer.
