You will probably get a bunch of different answers to that question but the most important thing is to account for the rod guides when setting the drag. The friction from the guides can double the amount of drag at the bait. I have become accustomed to setting my drags a bit on the loose side-just tight enough to set the hook-and if necessary tightening up a bit while playing a fish. You can also attach a spring scale to your line and have an assistant pull on the scale and read where the drag slips. Be sure and load the rod when doing this. Tom

So how do you tighten the drag while a Fish is Online on an Open faced Reel ?
This whole subject is Very Important to me !
I feel that if my Drag is set right then if I Hook a Fish that is 2 Big for the Rod then the Drag might just Tire the fish out !

You simply stop reeling and slowly adjust the drag knob. It does take a bit of judgment to know what is tight enough. Better not enough than too much. Tom

Another topic about drag settings. The drag consists of fiber and steel washers that compress to create the resistance known as "drag". Leaving your drag tightened between fishing trips puts undue compression on the fiber washers, shortening their life span. Loosen your drag before storing your reels and extend the life of the drag.

I just learned that your Drag is supposed to let go when the Rod is Half way Bent Over !
That sounds easy enough to me !

I set my drag fairly loose and usually determined by the line strength I'm using for the fish I'm after. Basically enough to use the rod to hook set and load on a fish, but not more than enought to break light line. I also just typically set my drags to about half way. Most of the fish I catch are not going to be able to overpower the drag at that setting. If I'm after big fish, my drag is going to be set very close to max.
