Jared Urick asked posed this query over on the NAFC Facebook page (www.facebook.com/FishingClub): "When do northerns start hitting lures in the Spring?"

Anyone have any advice to share? I'll post it to the Facebook wall for Jared if you post your response here.

    Thanks!

If Jared is fishing a part of the Root that holds Pike, they should be starting soon but there is a closed season that starts right about now. Check the regs! Tom

For those members who have never fished pike in Wisconsin you need to know that  Cheese Head Pike are very persnickety when it comes to Wisconsin cheese they only like Sargento natural blend cheeses .. However If you want to get a reaction bite try taking away their crackers and beer…

Toms right with the weather warming up fishing in the back waters of the river should be picking up., use a slow to dead stop retrieve  ....   The root river is a tributary of lake michigan with special regs spring and fall  for Salmon spawning runs, make sure to check the regulations  before going out ..

    Take care and good fishing

Yes the Root has special salmon regs but I'm pretty sure they only apply up to the fist dam or in the case of the Root maybe the hatchery? The southern zone opens in May. Tom

You can fish lip-less cranks and jigs through the ice. They never rely stop.  They start staging as soon as ice out .
Take a kid fishing , If the fish aint biting entertain them. Photobucket
