Thought I'd share a couple of photos of the new, North American Record and Illinois State Record Grass Carp. It was caught by a young man named Jacob Millichamp with the assistance of his buddy, Logan Thomas. The carp was caught on 04/19/11, in Crescent Lake — a small body of water located just east of Alpha, Illinois. Millichamp's Illinois and North American record grass carp weighed 79 pounds even, was 49 inches long and had a 36-inch girth. The former Illinois record weighed 69 pounds, 8 ounces, and was caught in 2000 at Lake Petersburg. The North American record grass carp is/was 78 pounds, 12 ounces and was caught in 2003 on the Flint River, Georgia.

Why didn't they let it go?... Take some pictures, weigh it and release it? |

They fought the fish for a long time, took several photos. They made an good attempt to release it, but it was too late. Also, the small lake is overrun by grass carp and it is preferred to harvest a few. They are detrimental to the vegetation needed for other species of fish. Plus, would you release a record fish? I know I'd have a hard time. They were contacted by BassPro Shops who offered them $50,000.00 for it. I'd say, they made the right decision. |

Yeah, you're right. Im not a fan of carp. I think they are gross. I would never eat one. But that one is a monster. Why not keep it since most people don't eat them? I have seen some big ones but that one is a giant for sure! I wonder what they did with the carcass? |

That's amazing...BPS offered them 50 grand for a dead, stinking carp! The scales on that dude are bigger than most fish I catch. |
