I've made plans to take a boat out around the south puget sound, I have some bottom fish rigs mostly jigs and some plastics and I'll probly bring some frozen bait. Anyone in the area know more about the spots or what the fish like around here? Thanks

My experiance in the salt is limited but when ever I do get over that way I fish the kelp beds.
I like to use a half oz jighead with a white 4 inch grub.
Cast it up into the kelp and work it back just like fishing the pads.
Can't help you with spots to fish as I always head for Neah Bay.
I am sure you can catch fish mooching with Herring just about anywhere.
Make sure you check the rule book as I have heard the sound is closed in some areas.

I spent 5 1/2 years stationed in WA with the US Navy and took my boat from one end of Puget Sound to the other in search of rockfish and lingcod. I love Neah Bay. My best lure for fishing rockfish was the "Diamond Jig" in the 3 oz size. i would just drop it to the bottom and make about 6 turns of the reel to raise it a few feet from the rocks and start jigging. I dove all over Puget Sound and discovered that schools of large rock fish actually hung out about 10 feet off the bottom, especially around Neah Bay in about 90 to 100' of water. Never had much luck with bait, but those heavy jigs were awesome. However, expect to leave a couple in the rocks from time to time.

Repos, you might want to re-think your plans. According to the regs I believe you are limited to ONE rockfish per day and the ling cod season is very limited. It hardly makes it worth it. I don't know for sure these days but 30-40 years ago you could find kelp beds along the southwest side of Blake Island that were pretty productive.

when i lived in WA me and a bunch of friends would go over near Grapeview that's near Shelton and fish off the pier or off a bridge near an old gas station and catch bullhead and wait till dusk and or later and then go back to the pier and go fishin for some bigger fish we use to catch all kids of fish even some big rock fish. hell every now and a gain we even use to get a small shark or two. and that water is connected to the sound. my best advise would be to try that but then i aint been there in about 7 or8 years now.
