Tuesday was a fantastic day out in NH lakes region. lost count after about 40 each between my dad and myself, and all were smallmouths. And it was very easy to uncover the pattern that day for us. . . spinnerbaits. While fishing the wind blown side of island and rock outcrops, we could go cast after cast sometimes, majority of hits taken while casting straight in to the wind. I thought this was due to the smallies waiting for the wind to push bait toward the shoals. Not everything we were hooking in to was a male watching the nest either, a lot were fat, hungry females cruising around, but for the most part they were feeding on a lot of the hatch that was going on that day. (all the flies in the mouths suggested thats what they were eating) however even the males wanted it, we were almost retrieving them not far from the surface either and they would launch for them. very active fish up there in the 70 degree water. nothing like getting bass thumb on both hands and a case of casting shoulder, not to mention i lost 2 of my favorite color Stanley Premier spinners, which luckily for me, arent produced anymore. i suppose i should have re-tied more often than i thought. andi couldnt tell you guys how many threw the hook or tried going after the blades. OH YEA!! all were successful releases as well. |
