I would get the fastest gear ratio you can. That allows to really burn it back to the boat when you need to, but you can still slow down by just reeling a lot slower. If you get a slow or medium paced gear ratio, fish slow easier, but you have to put a lot more work into it to crank it back fast.
I swear, it was this big (---------------------------------------)

Rich: First it would help if ya told us how deep the cranks your using run, If it's 15'+ then I'd say a 5-2-1 if they are running in the 6'-8' I'd say 6-4-1 , and if your running 1'-4'  or spinners I'd go w/a 7-1-1 ratio Faster is not always better a good middle of the road Ratio is the 6-4-1 , but in the end it's all up to what ya think ya want JMHO!!!!!

The pros always say to use a 5.3, but I kind of like a 6.4 better. More important than that for crankbaiting, get the rod right. Read my answer to your post about rods.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, if it wasn't for my super smooth carbon drag, my 30 year old Trilene would bust!
