One of my father's friends will be taking us a few miles out off of the Mississippi coast around July. Any tips on what works and what I could catch?

Whats your plan? Find out what fish spieces you'll be targeting....then we might be able to help you out. |

We aren't going after a specific species. All I know is that we will be bottom fishing one night and will be going after Specks the next day. Thanks |

Take a big bloody steak and put it on a size 1 hook... Just joking! If you need information about saltwater fishing, I probably won't be much help to you. I'm more of a freshwater guy. |

Yea, most of the fishing I do is in freshwater so I really only know the "basics" about saltwater. Thanks for the comment. For a second I thought you were serious |

Well I assume if your going offshore from Mississippi...you'll be bottom fishing in the Gulf...probably for red snapper/snapper...grouper...etc...What works here in the North Atlantic differs in the Gulf. You would probably need some bottom rigs and Hi-lo rigs for bottom fishing...bait...use jigs or live bait...i believe they use alot of ballyhoo/mullet/shrimp/crabs...Gear I would use something in the med/heavy rod...12-20 lbs nothing too stout...your not targeting Tuna or Sailfish...and pair it up with a nice reel...As for the Speckled Trout...use saltwater spinner baits, with trailer or use live bait...mullet/shrimp...light tackle....Hope this puts you in the ball park....Let us know how you did... |

Ok I will have to try that. Thanks for all the info. I am now sure that I will be going the night of July 3rd and the day of the 4th. I will tell all of you how I did and hopefully there will be a big fish picture. |

Well we caught a 22lb 1oz redfish, some specks, a flounder, and a 45lb shark. About 3a.m. we hooked into a 100lb+ stingray. I fought it for at least 20 minutes and stopped making progress so my dad took the pole and he fought it for about 2 minutes and the line snapped during one of the runs. All in all it was a great trip. I will post pictures asap |

I haven't been offshore fishing in years. We used to go to Bike Week in Daytona every year, and while there, ride the bikes down to Ponce Inlet and book an offshore charter. I really miss it. |
