How does everyone feel about the Berkley lightning rod?

    short story---
i wanted a lower priced rod so i went to the local Gander mountain and came across the Berkley AMP series rods and it felt good but i think i jumped on it mostly b/c of the look (not a smart move to pick for looks). so i grabbed up a 6'6" M action... well got to use it the other day and its defiantly not what im looking for. its already got "paint or epoxy or something of that sort" coming off around the top of the reel seat, plus the way you tighten up the reel is by screwing up the handle, and i couldnt get it tight enough with out it sounding as if it was going to break and on every hook set it was coming loose, now how am i supposed to fish with the fear that on every hook set my reel could end up in the water.(now im not trying to dogg the rod b/c it could just be the one i had) but with that said im returning the rod ASAP and wanting to pick up something different and was thinking about the Lightning rod series, any thoughts, experiences or reviews of the rod will be greatly appreciated or make another suggestion for a rod that Gander Mountain carrys (looking for an "all around" bass pole)

Thanks guys and story was alil longer than intended sorry...

I don't own any Lightning Rods, but I do have 2 Berkley Cherrywood rods and like them very much. Price is about the same as the Lightning Rods.

yea ive seen the cherrywoods there nice rods, not sure what happened with the amp model , it sure didnt meet my expectations, especially costing about the same as the cherrywood and lightning rods. again it could have been just the one i had but it was already showing signs of wear after one trip and ive got $15 shakespeare that ive had for years that are still holding up.

I have a lightning rod for my daughter to dropshot with but I dont think i would buy one for heavy duty fishing. She has done ok with it but she doesnt fish that often anymore. I use it when i have guests on the boat and teaching them to dropshot. For the weekend angler good rod for the hardcore guy i dont think i would buy it. The cherry wood rods are nice, I have two of them. good luck. Scott

I've always had good luck with Berkley rods. Maybe that particular one was bad. Sounds like everyone else likes them too.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, if it wasn't for my super smooth carbon drag, my 30 year old Trilene would bust!
