Saw a kid catch one about 5 pounds on a yellow Mister Twister while fishin for Crappies last spring. A couple ol timers told me you can catch em on a piece of braided cotton rope that has been frayed on the end. You tie it to your line and toss it out, they grab it and the rope gets tangled in their teeth. They said it works best when you see them and you cast it in front of them.

It's nylon rope not cotton. I posted previously about how to make this lure. It is AWESOME on a fly rod. Just use the same tackle you'd use for bass. You'll find my topic about making the rope gar lure under the "longnose gar" thread.

Sounds like cotton rope works too.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, if it wasn't for my super smooth carbon drag, my 30 year old Trilene would bust!

I bottom fish using a river rig with a 5/0 circle sea hook and at least a 12 inch steel wire leader. throw on a 3 or 4 inch live bluegil or shad as bait and they come running. I would be using a larger rig, like one you would use for catfish, and 15-20 pound test mono line. just be prepared for these guys to fight the entire time! from the moment they are hooked until the moment they are release into the water!

Depends on the gar species you're targeting. Alligator gar will require HEAVY tackle. Other gar species can be caught on the same tackle you'd use for bass fishing.

Personally i use 65lb spiderwire stealth braid w/ 2 18" 45lb saltwater cable leaders 5-0 or 6-0 circle hooks and a 3 oz. Solid sinker with a heavy action snagging rod and a deep sea baitcast reel. Believe me alligator gar especially large ones will tear up some tackle and poles seriously heavy duty equipment is required when dealing with alligator gar. Now longnose gar are fairly easy to catch on average equipment even when they are fairly large but will still fight very hard so make sure you make good use of your drag in either situation or you will pay for it literally ive destroyed a couple of reels and lost alot of line and tackle but the reward is definitely worth it. Btw i use shad and other baitfish and that seems to be like candy to them i hope this helps.
