I actually started fishing a few years ago in a very similar environment. For me, it was a simple bobber, weight (split shot is easiest) and baitholder hook with a shiner on the end. I used 12# line, which was a bit heavy but it will help you pull out the occasional stick or small log that you may snag on. Also, I used snap swivels and snelled Eagle Claw hooks to start with to make for an easy change of hook or lure. Best of luck |

that sounds like a pretty good type of place to throw a spinnerbait! Don't need any weight. Just tie the spinnerbait to the end of your line and cast it out there. Spinnerbaits will come through tree branches fairly well without getting hung up. |

A shiner is a bait fish. Spinnerbaits are weighted, so they sink. They have a weighted head and hook with a skirt attached to it, the head is formed to a bent wire that has 1 or 2 spinning metal blades above the head and the hook. The wire with the blades help protect the hook from snagging on objects underwater. You can start your retrieve as soon as the lure hits the water to keep it near the surface, or let it sink to the bottom and hop it along the bottom back to you, or count it down (about 1 foot per second) and begin the retrieve when the lure is at the depth you want it to be on the retrieve.

It will work anywhere in the water column. Just depends on how deep the fish are. |
