Well thanks to all that helped me with the Bass fishing (It really cleared up some things)
But now i have a Different Problem. (I guess you could call it a problem)
I'm going fishing in a Place called the Jetti's.
Its a Saltwater places with LOTS of ROCKS and LOTS of STUFF YOU CAN GET CAUGHT ON.
And LOTS of ships come through there so there is always lots of waves.
Rod i'm using is a Ugly Stick that's Maybe 6 Foot and 11 - 12 Pound test.
I'm fishing off the Small beach. and there's LOTS of bugs in the air.
Now because like i said im new to fishing In seriousness what should i use??
right Now i have a 3OZ Weight on there now what rig and hook should i use??
Oh and i usually use dead Shrimp (Don't have a Bait Bucket)

I'd go with a 1/0 hook. Tie a 3 way swivel to the end of your line. If you have 12 pound test line, use 10 pound test for the rest of this rig. From one remaining swivel eye tie a 12" length of line with your hook at the end. From the last remaining swivel eye tie an 18" to 24" length of line with your weight at the end. Three ounces is a lot of weight for 10 to 12 pound test line so cast easily, lob it out, or the weight will just snap off the line it's tied to. By using slightly lighter line for the droppers for your hook and weight, if you get a snag you will only lose the short leader with the hook or weight instead of a lot of line with your swivel. Saving you some money! By the way, in what state are you fishing?

Hey RRichards, I can help you out, but I need alittle more info. What fish are present where you will be fishing? Also, what city/state your in? From what you listed, it's not bad, but can use some improvement. Your rod is good, use a spinning reel if possible, you'll be able to cast out further..but I'd change your line to 30lb braid and use flurocarbon leader. Your hook selection depends on the kind of fish your fishing for. You can go with a 3 way swivel or a fish finder rig, or a bottom rig, or a hi/lo rig. You have to or should take the tide into consideration as well. Usually the best time to fish is incoming tide and right before or right after slack tide. Some will say outgoing tide, but that's been debated for the last hundred years...lol, truth is...who knows? You can catch fish on either tide, but you'll have more success in the incoming tide. And if your on the jetty, be careful. It can be slippery, watch the tide, make sure you get off before high tide. You don't want to get washed away. Anyways, good luck, let me know where your at and what kind of fish are present and I can give you more detailed info. |

Hey RRichards...Ok, well i'm not from Florida, but I did a quick internet search...check out this website www.jacksonvillebeachpier.com It's got some good info on fishing the beach, piers and jetties in Jacksonville. Apparently, there's a whole lot more swimming in your waters than Whiting...Now for your setup...I'd change your line to something a bit heavier...I use 30lb power pro braid. If braid isnt your choice, go with 20lb mono or 30 pound mono...(berkley trilene). Use a 3 way swivel, connect your main line to the top your leader to the side (make your leader atleast 18 inches) and then connect your sinker. Depending on the current you might have to go 5oz or heavier...you want it to hold the bottom. Hook choice would be a 1/0 or 2/0 aberdeen (J hook) or a 1/0 or 2/0 bait holder hook...so you don't loose your shrimp to the current or when you cast out your line. But this is just a guide...you have to experiment, also visit the local bait and tackle shop...get some advice from them. Then when your on the beach or pier or jetty, see what others are using and what they are catching or targeting...Good luck...let me know how it goes. |

First off get a good rod heavy one like a 8 to 10 ft surf rod, a heavy duty spinning real or a medium convential the price range for that starts about $80. Line 12 to 15lb test. Weights 1 to 3 oz. Hooks 1/0 or 2/0 Bait check with the local bait and tackle shops. Now when cast out its heave it out as far as you can, on the retrieve as you get close to the jetty hold the rod up high and increase your speed, remember get extra tackle because you are going to loose gear by getting stuck. Good luck. If you think I'm joking about the price of the gear I'm not I fish jetties and piers all the time I estimate I have over $2000. tied up in gear and that's not high end stuff. |

Experiment with the shrimp...try it whole, and cut...see what works best. As for your rod/reel combo...your 6 1/2 rod is good...you don't need to go out and get one of the 10ft rods...you can, but not necessary...a 6 1/2-7ft uglystik will catch fish too...As for the reel...go with a spinning reel...like I said, you'll be able to cast out much futher with a spinning reel. Your line...Don't go too light..you want something thats abrasion resistant and that can handle what ever is lurking around. Your sinker...you want something that can hold bottom...Depends on the current...if you can get away with 3oz..thats good..if not, your going to have to heavier. Up hear in NY, sometimes 8 oz doesnt hold bottom, and that's in the bay. Also, see if you can get a fish finder rig at your tackle shop...there about 50 cents..if not go with the 3 way swivel. And remember, ask questions when your at the bait and tackle shop, they should guide you in the right direction on what gear to use and bait and such. And when your out there..observe what others are doing. Good luck...and catch one for me! |
