i would like to know if anyone knows how to connect a tach/rpm gauge to a 74 evinrude starlite outboard motor? i have two tachs, one has a purple, grey, black wires. the other i bought from autozone, a sunpro tach. red, white, black, green wires. |

Yep, I installed a tach on my 1967 Evinrude Starflite 80 motor and I love it. The SunPro should have wiring instructions with it. Connect the red wire to the + battery terminal, the black wire to the - battery terminal, the green wire to the - coil terminal, the white wire to the instrument lights. The tach makes controling your speed and especially engine warmups a breeze.

that is good info now one more question where on the coil pack do you connect the green wire? i will have pictures on my profile so you can look at it. thanks for your help. |

Connect the green wire to the negative terminal on the ignition coil. My motor has an automotive type coil. I assume you have positive and negative terminals on your coil pack? OK, I checked your photos. Our motors look very similar but mine has a VW automotive coil. Works great by the way, much less $ than an Evinrude coil.
