here is how to make bait out of the eggs from a fish you just caught.
when cleaning fish and you find RED eggs DO NOT toss them out instead do this...
1. place in bowl
2. add about 1/2 cup to 1 cup epson salt per every cup and a half of eggs
3. mix till well coated
4. place in empty fiber container or any container with lid thats not clear
5. place in shaded are outside where sun wont hardly touch it for one month.
after that month when you go fishing you will have the best bait money NEVER bought and its so easy you can make it any time and stay stocked on it.
salmon and trout LOVE it they cant get enough of the self made stuff |

Boraxo preserves eggs& you can freeze them. As in soap. Makes them firm |

We cure Salmon and Steelhead eggs for bait. We use various Borax based cures or straight Borax, depending on what the finished product needs to look like.
They will keep for a time rfrigerated, but we will normally freeze them and take them out as needed. Pint jars in the bait shops and stores will sell anywhere from $20-$40.

I can imagine that a lb. of roe, cured with a lb. of Epson salts, or for that mater, even a 1/2 lb of salts, after a week, would be pretty durn rubbery. I also used Pro Cure when I was cureing salmon eggs. We can't use eggs to fish here, except certain streams, after Sept. 15.. I use to cure up a heck of a batch and send to my Bro in Rogue River, untill he passed. I then would send some to a feller in Grants Pass, untill he decided that he didn't want to pay for the shipping!! As ya can durn well imagine, Gold Streaking 50 lbs of anything outa S.E. Alaska is durn spendy.. I probably see several tons of Salmon egg thrown away every summer. If Iwas smart, I'd try to figure out what to do with'um.. I have several lbs. sittin' in my freezer now, that I have no use for!! Allen |

I have seen the use of salmon meal dried as fish food for aquariums, maybe you can figure out a market for the pet food world???? they are nothing more than little balls of protein and not any different than the salmon meal I use "in my humble opinion".

I would bet it roe is good for that , all eggs really, Give my dog a few raw chicken eggs in the fall/winter, when the air gets dry, tends to keep her from getting itchy, and coat staqys shiny. There you go, get into the vitamin business, theres "natural" vitamins for everything else, (made from everything else too) make a pill out of fish roe, for nice shiny hair. the good news is the "natural" market is much less regulated by the FDA, then say perscribed or over the counter meds.

Ya would think that whats good for me is good for my critters too, but they don't agree! Allen |

allen: I normally dont feed my critters any kind of caned or store bought food i normally make all mine but i had a few critters that refused to eat anything but the store bought stuff. Normally i feed my cats or dogs T-bone stakes or fresh fish or any other kind of meats. I find critters like people have their own likes and dislikes just like they have their own personalities. you can try sticking them in liver or sardiens or something like that that has a stronger then the fish smell critters have very sensitive smelling and if it smells like it dont belong they tend to know it and they find away around what dont belong. liver and sardines other things like it have a smell that is so strong it hide most other smells domkaaj: its a thought for the "natural" stuff but there are a lot of people out there that wont touch the things then there are the others that cant take have anything that have to do with fish. then there are the real people i dont like they are the ones that take things they cant or shouldnt have just so they can sue or try to get money from the companies. i think ill just stick to giving my2cents to people that are willing to listen or who ask for it. |
