    Here's a length-to-weight conversion formula that I've found to be fairly accurate on the fish I've caught, as well as when I've compared the results to standard conversion charts.

    Fish Length (Cubed)    Divided By    Species Variable

    For your bull bluegill, it would be:

    15X15X15 = 3,375    Then  3,375/1,200 = 2.8 pounds

    The variable for bluegills is 1,200; bass 1,500; walleyes 2,700; pike/muskies 3,500

    I haven't found a variable for trout and salmon yet; for those fish I use the standard  Length X Girth (Squared) Divided by 800.

    Try these in the future and let me know what you think.

    And, if you've got a picture of that monster 'gill, I'd sure like to see it.

    That is a step in the right direction Kurt! I have seen a set of formulas that use girth as well as length. It sure would be nice for us to have a table like this available on the site perhaps as part of a "reference desk"? As far as pictures go, it would be nice if there was an easier way to post them or failing that a set of instructions for those of us computer illiterates who grew up before the electronic age.

    Wow, great tip!  Nice to know that some of the NAFC head staff still visit the forums these days.
