I have decided to try  trolling a jet diver 20 in this small clear TVA tailwater lake. I got a clear Lure Jensen 20 and am looking for suggestions and tips. I have been to TJ's website, but my fellow members are probably the best source. One question I have is what is with the top holes. LJ says there is 3 holes on top for adjustments but they look filled in ( I do see circular indentions) do I drill or poke to clear holes or should I just use from package and forget about the holes?

I would think the holes would let the lure drop faster. I do not troll, but that is my thought on it.

I use my jet divers the way the come. The only adjustment I make while using them is the amount of line I let out. I use 24" to 36" leader material behind the diver before the spoon or lure.

I am not sure Captain Q but I think what they are taking about is what we called just divers. We used them years ago at Bouy 10 trolling for Silvers (Coho) Salmon. They pull your line down right behind your boat when you are trolling and you put your lure 4 to 6 feet behind the Diver. When you get a fish on it trips and doesn't pull down so that you can play the fish.
Using divers you can troll pretty fast and not have to put on an ungodly amount of weight to get down. Fishing Bouy 10 there was so many boats that if you had alot of lines out a long ways it would have been tangle city. So diviers was the way to go. If you have anyone around you that fished Bouy 10 on the Columbia River 30 to 40 years ago or so they will tell you what was used and what a huge fishery it was. The State of Wahington alone was releasing 25 to 30 million yearling Coho a year into the Columbia and the State of Oregon Was planting millions also.

my grandfather showed me how use them and he said if you clear those holes you can adjust the amount of dive the diver will take just by changing where the line attaches

What your talking about are dipsy divers total differant from jet divers. Jet divers don't trip. But both have there place in trolling.

Good catch, Wellsley! I don't use the jets because we normally have downrigger lines straight off the transom, so a jet diver would be tangle city. You can run a dipsey or walker diver straight, but you can't make a jet go to the side!

Thanks for the advise. What your grandfather said makes sense. I just did not want to get something new and start drilling holes, but I will if necessary in lieu of what your grandfather suggested. I don't know why they don't come with clear holes to begin with to make those adjustments. Anyway, thanks again.
