What is the most unconventional thing that you use to fish with? being something that you put on your lures or something that you just throw on a hook and toss out.

Frozen squid! I use the heads (or part of a head) as jig trailers for bass, cut the body into strips and use it for striped bass bait, use body chunks for channel cat bait, and a tentacle or two on a small hook for sunfish to use for flathead cat bait. I have caught my pb channel cat on squid, and even hooked flatheads on it. Frozen squid is an amazingly diverse universal bait for nearly any fish species.

Here's an off-the-wall bait we use for channel cats. Cut hotdogs into 1 inch pieces and soak in a quart jar of cherry kool-aid with garlic powder added. Put a snap-swivel on your line so you can put the hotdog on without retying. Now press the hotdog piece down over the eye of a treble hook and onto the points. Attach to the snap-swivel and let 'er fly!

So that's how you keep those hot dogs on, and the "marianade" sounds like a good idea also.

In 1 of the other rooms they were talking about using WD40. But I just can't see that being very good for the lake

AZ...cherry kool-aid and garlic are both proven catfish attractants...and the hotdogs are a favorite bait. The best part though is not having to deal with something that smells like...well...you know! Give it a try and let me know how it works.

    Thanks Mo, I will.
i don't know about WD-40, it used to work very well but the formula has changed over the years (this from a person who had the duty of cataloging the MSDS sheets). If I remember correctly from reading a thing called the "WS-40 story, the rust prevention characteristics of fish oil may have been in the mix, is it there now, who knows. I was told a number of years ago, fishing in Utah that they would cite you for spraying your baits because of the petroleum in the mix.

I have only done this once and it worked. Bored fishing with no luck.I took the can top off the aluminum can. Bent it in the middle(a 45 degree bend), threaded it onto my line. Placed a few split shot above for weight. I call it luck, cause on the first cast I hooked and landed a nice rainbow. The reason for calling it luck, look up Irvine Lake.
