I think my son is ready for some fly fishing. We are heading out to a small lake that has some room for him to cast. He has been practicing quite a bit. He'll be using the fly rod I got him last year from Albright. A #4wt Topwater outfit, 7'6". A big thank you to Rod Tosser, Tunip and many others who donated flies and jig to him when exchanging/trading his deer tail. Unfortunatly, I have lost the PM and mailing address of who Ethan did trade his tail with, I appoligize andd want to thank you as well.
I thank all of you for helping teach a young child values and hope to have some great pictures from our trip to post.

That's great. I didn't get into fly fishing until 3 years ago, now I love it. Get him started and I'm sure he will too.

    Jeremy,
I hope everything goes well.  If he's been practicing, the learning curve will be shortened on the water.  Staying involved with your kids is so important for their growth as a person, and fishing together is so rewarding down the road.  I had to turn down an invitation today from my son, who calls me every week to join him and his buddies on the water.  We've enjoyed 28 years on the water together and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I cant agree more with you Dave. I find myself thinking of the days out on the water with my father and grandfather. They are great memories, I hope one day that my boys will do the same when they are older

Well, the weather didnt quite help us out. We went out today, the wind was blowing pretty good. It was enough to cause casting issues no matter which side of the pond we went to. Better luck next time, which should be in late feb/early March

Practice your roll casting.  Keeps you more out of the wind and with practice can be fairly accurate method.  Will also help when overhanging trees and shore brush inhibit conventional casting.

At least you were able to go.

Jeremy: Yes teach him to roll cast, by all means it will really help him on those windy days and when there is overhead cover!!!

Jeremy, which lake were you on? We were camping and fly fishing this weekend on the Upper Kings. Didn't do well up there, but stopped by Avocado and Denise caught this 16" 'bow on a hand tied #24 bwo and her G-Loomis 3 wt rod I built for her a couple of years ago. If you want specifics, let me know, and I'm sure Ethan can get into some sweet fish.

    Bp,
Any time out there with them is awsome. Watching my 6 yo casting a clear water bobber with a neele fish on the other side, hook up and land the fish all on his own. Those Shakespear kid poles are great.

Another option if its to windy is to do a droop back technique , stand in a knee deep rifle section and let out some fly line move the rod back and forth slowly if nothing then let out a bit more line and repeat . Use a nymph or something like a wiggle bug , this technique was in one of my books .It is limiting but dose work.

Even if it is to windy to cast you can still teach them how to read the water and look for clues as to what they are eating .
