    Just bought this for $50.00

It had everything i was looking for, I needed a bigger pole, a stronger reel and i was looking to get a bitting alarm.

Not only did it have the size rod and reel i was looking for, it also had a built in fish alarm. Was expecting to pay more then $50 on just the rod and reel but was stoked to see this on the shelf.

I know its a zebco but it had, instant anti reverse, T-handle, and 20lb mono pre spooled.

Haha now i can say i bought a $50 zebco XD

What do you guys think of this?

Ktuck, excellent choice! You would be hard pressed to find a better catfish combo for $50....I know this because I have one. I have been using it for over two years now. I have caught cats up to 26lbs. with it, no problem. It will serve you well.

No problem with the rod and reel, a great value. It would be a good idea to toss the line and re-spool. It is rare that a combo like that gets decent line from the factory and you have no way of knowing how old it is! The way my luck runs, first time out I would hook the fish of a lifetime only to have the line break. Some new line would be cheap insurance.

Hey PG, Its hard to believe, but mine came spooled with 20lb. Trilene big game mono! Ktuck, do like Pegsguy says, check that line first to make sure its fresh...and don't forget to back off the drag when not using the reel. This keeps your drag washers fresh.

Hmm not quite sure how fresh the line is, i go to walmart once every 1-2 weeks and they had just stocked it, there was only 2 left.

What kind of line would you suggest for this rod/reel?

Ktuck...You should use the same line Zebco puts on them...20lb. Trilene mono. I'm sure someone is gonna suggest you put some high dollar braid or flourocarbon on it, but from experience, I suggest you stick with what it was designed for.

Ktuck...just had a thought...You said yours is the spinning combo...not the spincast like mine! You would want to stay with mono for the one like mine, but a good braid might be a plus on the spinning outfit. I like braid on spinning reels...the lack of line memory is a big plus!

The choice of braid , fluoro or mono comes down to personal preference with one exception- braid is a very poor choice on spincast reels. Another thing to consider is that braid (and I include traditional braid and fused line in this) fishes differently than a mono line (fluoro included). If you have never fished braid before be prepared for the necessity of learning a new 'touch' especially on your hookset. An upside to both braid and fluoro is that they don't deteriorate as fast as nylon mono so some of the initial expense is defrayed.

Oh so true PG...I have tried braid on my spincast reels...and the results were not good! As far as spinning reels, I really like its performance on those. For small to medium channel cats the braid would be fine, but for those big flatheads, I believe I would stick with that mono. The stretch can save your butt when that big flat decides to turn and run!

Spool that bad boy up with what you like best. Braid is nice and has a total diff feel with a fish on. I always use Circle Hooks when I fish for kats now so there is no setting the hook they hook thenselves. Just remember, if you go with Braid and you fish a rocky area you are more likely to break off than using mono. Good luck and enjoy your new combo, you got a good deal on it.
