The Alabama rig as designed is illegal in most Illinois waters. I have heard that this kind of rig set up with 2 lures with hooks and 3 'decoy' type hookless lures is legal. I know of several good sticks that plan on giving one a try come soft water. I'll post an update when I hear more.

I've noticed that the Alabama rig is illegal in a few states...try this. Most umbrella rigs we use in saltwater have a "trailer lure" that simulates that one bait fish lagging behind the school, modify your Alabama rig, rig 4 hookless shad bodies and then tie on the trailer shad that is rigged with a hook. Most predator fish are going to hit that fish that is lagging behind the school. That's the one that will have the hook.

If ya decide to throw one of these just make sure your rod can handle the weight or you'll end up with a broken rod tip!!

I haven't thrown one, made a couple clones for a friend, he has been catching the heck out of fish on Kentucky lake. in a four or five hour trip, he has caught as many as 50+, with most being keeper fish (15+ inches) some as big as 7 pound, from the way he talks it is like the BASS pros say, bass can't help themselves. BUT remember that is a lot of weight on that rod and on your shoulders and back.

I've been seeing a couple anglers use these in tournaments on TV the last couple weeks. From what I've seen the "Alabama" rig is basically an umbrella like rig used with a cast and retrieve instead of trolled behind the boat. Personally, I think I'll steer clear of these as quite frankly even the "pros" look like a doofus throwing around something that huge. I don't have the problems of being a tourny fisher either, so I don't need to worry about loading up for a weigh in, so I can see the advantages and disadvantages pretty well. I would take it as more of a novelty that I don't feel will catch on too soon, but the lure companies (I believe I've seen StrikeKing making one?) will certainly make some money off of them

alabama rig really? in my life its always been called a umbrella rig been used for trolling for striped bass. in maryland where i live it is illegal to use more than two sets of hooks so it is basically a teaser rig and i try to save my strength for curling beers dont want to throw something that heavy all day

Why not just drag a dredging net behind your boat?

If you catch more than one fish on a single rig all your going to feel is dead weight.
I like the feel of the fight not dragging up the bottom.

I also like the fight of a fish, unfortunatley, most tournament fishermen who use this thing are more concerned with the money than the fight the fish give. Most tourney fishers I've seen land a bass seem to do so within 10 seconds of setting the hook. Not much of a fight there.
