Hello all,

I am thinking of buying a fishing kayak. What makes kayak bass fishing different from fishing from a bass boat, besides obvious reasons?

Also, what things do you look for in a good fishing kayak. Are their specific brands that are better?  I guess I just need some kayak fishing 101.

Hey bass, I like to kayak fish because up here in Michigan there are a lot of lakes that do not have a boat launch, You can get to some really cool remote lakes that others can’t and no gas. There are many other reasons why I like to kayak fish. But really it’s just the best way I feel to really get to enjoy nature uninterrupted by others and explore. As far as which fishing kayak you want that depending on how much money you are willing to pay. For the past two years I was using a not so great one that I modified. But when I got my taxes back this year I went off and picked up the BPS ascend fs12. Which was around $680. This is real cheap for a fishing kayak. This thing is real nice and had some good reviews and had all the bells and whistles that I wanted and a reasonable price so I thought why not. As far as what you would need depends on what you want to bring and how much space you need. I got the ascend fs12 because it has a total of 4 rod holders and plenty of space for anything that I would need to bring with me. A lot of people prefer sit on top oppose to sit in. I like the sit in because of the space. So when it comes down to it, it’s all up to what you would like to do and where you want to go. Do some looking around, read some reviews. Any other questions feel free to ask

I thing I forgot to say it that I am a big guy, 6'5" 270lbs. Will this affect the kind of kayak I would need to get?

Good question BassWisperer67...I am 6'5" and 280...do they make "big and tall" kayaks? I think kayak fishing looks like a blast, but I sometimes feel cramped in a regular 10 or 12ft. boat.

I would say get a sit on top or take a look at the ascend fs12 sit in there’s a lot of room I’m 6’3 200 and its comfy. here’s a review

Seat is very nice, spent 6 hours in them without getting out. If the fish would have been working with us more could have stayed longer. It is my first and last kayak! Does everything I want it to. It is built solid so it is a bit heavier than others but worth every pound.
Second I also bought the 2 fs12 for duck hunting instead of skiffs and I am not disappointed at all. I have 2 daughters that love them and a nephew that thinks they kick butt. Had several friends in them and they fell in love. They thought I was crazy with my size to duck hunt out of them, they were so wrong. Half the time I don't get to use them because the kids are duck hunting with them. With the sit in you are so low to the water you blend in so much easier. Buying another one this spring for my youngest!
