Had a great last couple of days. Fished nearly all day on Friday with a client, caught lots of fish and screwed up twice. He had hooked some nice walleye and I tried to net them. We lost both at the net. It was a joint failure, he was using some noodle rod from the 60s and had a tendency to reel the lure up to within 10 inches of the incredibly bowed rod and was never able to get the fish over the net and I kept jabbing the net into the dang fish. If we'd have boated a walleye, we'd have caught all the sportfish in the lake, largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, green sunfish, white bass, channel cat, flathead cat and perch, but nooooo walleye.

IDK If you guys watched the video of catching cats on crankbaits and stuff, but these cats have been pounding this lil arkie crappie crank in chrome, both channels and flats. It's good stuff.

I was also able to catch some bass on top this morning. The largest fish mighta been a tad over 3#. Here's the funny story. A bass inhales my jitterbug. I slam the hookset, the little bass is airborn coming outta the water and my sun glasses go flyin' off my hat and into the water, I glance down, just in time to see them disappear. Since these were my expensive ones, I realize I'll be diving for these later in the day, drop an anchor tied to my empty water bottle and come back with my kids to search the area. The water was about 9 feet deep and a little murky. On the first attempt we stir up the silt and can't see. I went back several hours later and believe it or not, I found the glasses about 8 feet away from where the anchor landed.

Lots of cats, bass and skinny skinny crappie.

This thread continues to burst at the seams with lunkers! Great fishing guys! OK...here's my contribution. Just got home from the O-F members meet. Had some incredible fishing, both on the hosting lake of Pymatuning and also Lake Erie. Here are a few pics. I will also post up a video from the meet...look for it also here in the MISC forum.

Had a nice day on the water with my buddies Matt (pictured with me) and Mark as we were able to find a few Walleye in the John Day Pool of the Columbia River.  Temps were in the high 80's with no wind until we fired up the big motor.  The Columbia Sportswear Omni Freeze Zero shirt kept me very cool, no sunburn.

Nice fish Dave !!!! WTG !!!

Well after the rain the wind picked up out of the west so I sat on the bank and made up 4 spoons and went shopping for a HOT one I heard about and it paid off today:::

Seneca 6/12/2013

Up at 5:30 but just could not get in gear this morning had three rods in the water at 6:30 am  . First fish to hit just wiggled the rod tip nothing home just thinking about changing lures out and the 27’ rigger acts like a limb or plastic bag is hung up on the cable then the rod pops ????  Just heavy so now I think it was on the line , then it’s fin breaks the surface sees the boat and now I’m along for the ride reels screaming OH-BOY !!!!!! I eyeball Kingerboy and he’s looking the other way……..  Finally get him in the net hooked bad bleeding like a stuck laker…….. 24.5” brown 8.5 or better on the bogo grip……..get squared away and run back thru nothing but on the return trip same rigger 16” or so laker I lose at the boat….. start putting back down and the 21’ rigger goes off with a 18” brown…….. getting ready to run back thru and check the 27’ rigger and DUH it was at 17’ ………wonder how that happen…Kingerboy is giving me that Mutly laugh….. anywho ….. lost a  salmon on the 21’ rigger…… pulled a Dave M. (sodbuster) on the dead middle rigger was only picking fish up on the north troll so I dropped it down on the south troll and popped it free when I went over a baitpod jigging reeling it back to the boat….bam 19” brown…………. Picked a 17” bow up later got it back in the water after a quick tape check pretty skinny…….. It was a fun time out there I had taped up 4 spoons and three of them took fish one hooked up three time….. big brown was on a store bought spoon ….can’t have it all I guess LOL/././………………….

I took some clients fishing yesterday afternoon. 3 people in a 14.5' semi v can work, but in this case, every time I put my line in the water I crossed May's. We were trolling because I didn't really think I could teach them to cast from the boat. Despite not being able to fish, myself, it was a very memorable time. Unlike the past month, we only caught bass and bluegill.

Now, let me tell you about the one that got away. We were not killing them, like I've done in the last 6 weeks, but fish were coming into the boat. We went along this creek channel just off a point. The shallow side was 5 ft and the creek bed dropped to 8 then 13 ft. The lures we were using would tick 10' on a very long powerpro line, but the zebra mussels have grown quickly and I changed to mono, in order to keep the lures off the bottom while we trolled; however 5 ft the contact was constant and sometimes you hang up. May expressed that she had a fish. I was pretty sure it was just the bottom, but told her to reel in anyway. She had caught some weeds. As she got her line in, Bob said he thought he'd hung up on the bottom. I popped the engine in reverse and told him to reel in quickly. When we got to within 15 feet of the snag I had him hand me the rod, so I could free it, or use the plug knocker if it was really stuck. Almost directly above the snag, I had this weird feeling that something wasn't quite right. I'm checking the boat's position against the snag, then the shore, then the snag, trying to account for the wind and I wondered, is this moving? Sure enough, it was. I told Bob he'd hooked a really big fish. At this point we were in about 5 feet of water and I was trying desperately to see the tail as I pulled up trying to gauge the size. I couldn't move that sucker. Then it gently began swimming and I could feel the tail thump slowly. This was a monster. I gave Bob the rod and told him to guide the fish. The fish was having none of this. It swam under the boat. I knew if I left the rod with Bob, it'd be broken so I took it back sticking 3 feet into the water so the line wouldn't catch on the outboard as I adjusted for the fish swimming to the other side. I began suspecting this fish had higher thinking capabilities, because he tried to wrap the line around the engine and went under the boat several times. Once the fish was in front of the boat, we had May sit in the bow seat and I assumed the fish would head for deeper water. It didn't. May didn't like how hard it was to hold the rod. It "was too hard." She gave it back to Bob. About ten minutes had gone by and this fish was taking out line and pulling my little boat in a slower version of a nantucket sleigh ride. After the fish gave up trying to break us off on the motor it headed to the pilings for a boat lift. I got the rod back and began trying to alter it's course. I managed to keep it away from the first one, but the second one was going to be really difficult to steer the fish away from. I put all the pressure I thought the ten pound test could withstand and guessed wrong. I don't know if the fish got the line against the zebra mussels on the post or if I just pulled too hard. I know this, it was gone. I never saw it's tail. I'm left guessing what type of fish it was. Here are the likely candidates: 1. flathead; 2. immense channel cat (BTW the MO State record channel cat came from a lake about 15 miles up the road 34 lbs 10 oz); and 3. Grass eating carp. Here are the unlikely candidates: 1. scuba diver with a mean sense of humor; 2. alligator; and 3. Nessie. I am telling you, I wish we'd boated that fish, or at least seen the tail so I could identify it. If anyone asks me why I fish, it's because you never know what you'll hook.

Here's May.
