All of us go fishing, often by ourselves and often with friends or family.  My question to you all is this: have you ever entered into a heated or spirited debate with someone on issues of politics and or religion while fishing?  In my experience, this has not proven to be fortuitous for the parties involved as it often leaves a dark cloud of negativity looming over the remainder of the trip, especially if you adamantly opposed one another's points of views.  Even worse if you are then trapped on a boat with them for the rest of the day!  I have had at least one trip ruined by such an incident and came to the conclusion that fishing and politics and religion don't always mix well.  Just focus on the fish! What do you think?

I mean aren't we all out on the water to get AWAY from such things!? Fishing gives us a chance to reconnect with nature and affords us the luxury of temporarily forgetting the problems we face in our personal lives or difficulties we experience as a result of the world.

While I agree you might not want to talk about these things, I for one, know religion plays a big part in fishing. How many times have you or someone you know PRAYED for a bite?? ;-)

Politics are annoying. But religion does have alot to do with fishing. There are alot of stories in the Bible about fishing and how we should be "Fishers of men". I think if you take you son or daugher out fishing it would be a great time to talk about GOD.

I dont pray for a bite. I thank Him that I can walk, cast, drive and that He has given me the skills to catch fish.

Every time I catch a fish I pray ,"Glory to you LORD"

If I dont catch fish, well I still thank him.

There is no such thing as luck, just grace.

    Keep fishin

At the age of 14 while on a family vacation I saw a sign in a roadside diner we stopped in. The sign stated, "It is Strictly Forbidden to discuss POLITICS AND RELIGION in this establishment." Once we were on our way I asked my dad what was meant by what was written on the sign? He explained discussions on those two topics could become heated very fast and best avoided, especially with strangers in strange places. That never left me, especially when I was in the military. At all in-briefings in all of my overseas duty stations we were reminded not to engage in discussions of politics and religion, especially off base with the locals. I have a very dear and old friend I have recently reconnected with and we are on opposite sides as far as politics goes. He forwards me lots of political e-mail and noticed my lack of comments or replies. He finally brought the subject up and I told him I valued our friendship too much to end it over some dumb political cartoons and such. I feel the common man gets screwed any way you look at it and neither one of us is living in the lap of luxury. Tight lines always,

Well CQ...considering that YOU started this topic of "RE: Fishing + Politics and Religion, don't mix!"...but then have to make a POLITICAL statement that says "liberals don't fish"...IMHO...you just "voided" your original intent of the topic.

The generalization that you are expousing...that ALL liberals are "anti-fishing"...Peta & Sierra Club members...and "anti-outdoorsman"...is typical Repub / Libertarian / Tea Party BS

Go ahead and vote in Romney...have at it. I'll GUARANTEE you that the country will be even WORSE off IF he gets elected. The RICH in this country...and the "wanna-be's"...and Wall Street... are bleeding the country dry. Jobs outsourced to foreign countries by companies owned by several Repubs...but yet Repubs WHINE about Mexicans coming here illegaly. They also run their mouths about tax reform...but there are numerous comments / blogs etc...by Repubs / Tea Baggers about losing PRIVACY in the Swiss bank account scandel

IF I had MY way...EVERYONE in elected office in this country would get booted out...and replaced by folks who are unemployed.

The freakin' GRAVY TRAIN for ALL the parties would come to a screaching halt   and America would THEN have some REAL chance of recovery.

Since that isn't going to happen...it's all downhill from here until the Good Lord returns.

Then the amount of $$$ you have won't freakin' matter anymore...nor will anyone's "covetly held social status"

While I do not understand the root of your unrestrained anger and aggression, I also do not wish to debate political issues on a fishing website. And the fact that you take so personally an off handed, innocent joke and then respond with such a convoluted, angry diatribe towards me well, I do not wish to respond to such aggresion. Thanks for the post though.

Religion and politics never mix, never have and never will..but if may point out a few things. I find it interesting that you would choose that pic of Pope John Paul II, next to Obama. The liberals and Dems, have had an all out assault on the Christianity and particularly the Roman Catholic Church. It's a shame you would put a pic of a great man who has done more for humanity, and along with President Regan, and PM M. Thatcher, took down the Soviet Empire. And Dave, under our current leadership, our debt has risen to 15 trillion, unemployment is still at 9% in most states. The housing market has more foreclosed homes than any other period. From 2008-2010, Obama had full control of the govt. He had control of the House and Senate. What did he do? Pass a heath care law that is going to bankrupt the country, and spend money the country doesn't have. He has amounted more debt than the last 3 presidents combined. He has put more restrictions on small businesses and corporations than any other President. How's that hope and change working out for you? You guys need to realize, when has ever a lib dem, ever help the working poor? Never. They'll create programs and give u welfare, but do they ever want you to get ahead? No, they need to keep you poor, so you'll continue to vote for them. I've rambled on enough..in short, we need leadership that will cut taxes, cut spending, create a business friendly environment where businesses will come back to the US.

To be honest Barresi, I couldn't agree with you more on everything you just said. I am a believing Catholic and I agree Pope John Paul II was a great man and has done great things for mankind. I didn't mean to imply anything by putting him next to Obama, who I am NOT a fan of in anyway, and certainly was not issuing any kind of comparison between the two. I just used a political and religious figure to illustrate by point and to use a visual aid for the topic. No offense meant to you or anyone else. See how much debate comes from politics and religion? Imagine you, me, and Davesett2000 all stuck on a boat right now...

@ CQ...you started this with your comment about liberals...enough said...man up

@ Barresi..you mention an "assualt" on Catholics. SEEMS to me that the problem started with priests etc.... assualting boys MANY years ago...and the situation was continually covered up...until FINALLY became publicly spread around with the invention of the Internet etc....

Gotta wonder WHY the Catholic's membership #'s have dwindled over the same time

You also mention our "current leadership". In the last 15 years...growth of income for the "super-rich" has grown FAR faster that at ANY point in history.  And their followers want to have the same rapist attitude

MORE tax cuts for the Rich and Big Business?  You GOTTA be kidding me    blood sucking leaches

Rest assured B  I like what you have posted over the years on here regarding fishing & such...but this topic is open to warfare IMHO

ANd finally...@ CQ...at this point...only the Good Lord could force me into a boat with the 2 of you...because I've seen FAR too many political fanatics on BOTH sides of the isle

That would be an interesting boat outing, the 3 of us..lol, anyways I didn't mean to offend u Dave, but the fact of the matter is, what u mentioned regarding priests and children goes on in ALL religions. Just so happens the liberal media doesn't report it, just the Catholics, wonder why? Is it because they are against abortion? Are they for family values and not gay marriage? Dave like u said, I've liked what u also have contributed to the forums, but do your research. Hope and Change has got us nowhere, and now their new slogan is "foward". Haha..They should say "backward". We can debate this until the next election, but history shows, and this is a fact...our country prospers when we have a conservative in office or a majority of conservatives it the congress, house and senate. And all prosper, all, not just the rich. And thanks CQ for the comments, didn't expect that. I am going to end my part of this debate, It's only going to get ugly..and that is why "fishing, religion and politics" don't mix. Peace out!

Typical Tea Bagger response CQ  and meds your azz you ignorant twit  I haven't taken even an aspirin in the last 8 months. Typical put down by someone that can't handle "generalizations" about their lives.

I didn't "attack" your "faith in Christ"...all I did was point out that HUNDREDS of Catholic priests etc...have been sent to jail for child molestation you idiot.

If YOU want to take that personally...that's YOUR choice...but it was NOT my intention.

I'm continually AMAZED at the reading comphrension level of you Baggers...as ALL of you take comments on GENERAL thoughts personally...and then TRY to put down the person with a lower level of disregard

    I've done my research Barresi

Cry about gas prices like Romney & other Repub politicians are...and ya'all are CRYING about DRILLING & pipelines to Canada?

Well take a look over the years at what's happened

Let's look at crude oil productivity over the last 50 years...market manipulation

    http://www.eia.gov/totalenergy/data/annual/txt/ptb0502.html

Now let's look at exports of America's Petroleum products...more manipulation...

    http://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/hist/LeafHandler.ashx?n=PET&s=MTTEXUS1&f=M

How about the #  of operating refineries...301 in 1982...as of 2010...148.

    http://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/hist/LeafHandler.ashx?n=PET&s=8_NA_8O0_NUS_C&f=A

Our country prospers when we have a Conservative in the White House?

Give me a break. Nixon?  Reagan? the beginning of the idiotic "trickle down"...which has ended up more like a "suck up" by the rich  (should have been called the "Hoover Vacuum" years)

The Dems aren't perfect for SURE either  but you Baggers just have been too "dumbed down" by the Libertarian  / Tea Party to even see what is happening here in the country.

Go ahead & vote for Rominsky  it will be the worst thing you can do for this country

I thought I was done..but apparently not..Dave, your response is typical of a left wing lib. All attacks and name calling, nothing of real substance. You sound like a Canadian or from Greece. Do you want the govt. to provide EVERYTHING for you? Oil is traded in the dollar and only the dollar. How much is the dollar worth today or the last 2yrs? About 80 cents. Speculators drive up the price because our dollar is not worth a dollar. There's no certainty that the dollar will rebound or drop. That's why oil/gas is so much. Not to mentions all the taxes that come along with it. It's not coincidence that gold is at an all time high too, for the same reason. 15 trillion of debt, govt. just printing money to pay for its own debt. Funny how when you mentioned Nixon and Regan you left out Carter. Probably the 2nd worst President ever, next to Hope and Change. And Dave, stop the name calling, act and debate like an adult. You should be ashamed of your behavior. And you were in the US Army? Btw, I don't belong to the tea party, but u sound like one of those occupy wall st. yahoos.
