It's kind of sad that not one single member has had any experience with this unit or if they have, can't be bothered to share. I am a Lowrance user, but own an older unit, an LMS 525c DF. I have been very happy with the 4 Lowrance products I have purchased, 2 sonar units, a handheld GPS and an automotive nav unit. My only problem with the Elite 4 that I can see is my old eyes vs the smaller screen size. Sucks to get old! The MSRP on the unit is quite attractive, and if the small screen size doesn't bother you, why not? |

Pegsguy, Hey I too have a question about club involvement with these questions/answers; doesn't seem to me that if U don't do Twitter U can find anybody that wants to talk. as to your question about the Elite 4, I had Himminbird 798/788 on my old boat, just picked up a 05 Ranger Comanche and it has the Elite 5 on it. I don't like it compared to my Humminbird's in part because it's so hard to see. I'm a 52 yr old disable police and the eyes they aren't what they used to be. I will as soon as I can afford too be going back with Humminbird. hope this helps. |

All the reviews I have read are all good. You can check them out on Cabela's web site. If your looking for a good deal on one check out Lowrance's factoryoutletstore.com they have them for $199 and free shipping. I agree with Tom the small screen would be hard to see for theseold eyes. I would have to go with the Elite 5 DSI cost more but bigger screen. |

A quick followup, I would suggest going into a Bass Pro Shops, Cabela's, Gander Mountain, or big store like these and comparing the units side by side. The fact that with an upgrade in 1 size can make all the difference in the world. The Humminbird 798's a really good unit BUT the 898 has 2 1/2 more inches of screen and double the pixel power, makeing it FAR easier to see. I'm willing to bet Lowrance is the same. |

Good point on the size, but it has been my experience that once you go to a screen bigger than 5", the price skyrockets, mostly due to additional features that are standard on the upper level models. Not all of us have an unlimited fishing budget and can afford a four figure price tag on a sonar unit. I have an older Lowrance (LMS525c)that I bought just ass the HD units were being introduced. I much prefer it to any Humminbird I have ever used and have no problems reading the screen even in bright sunlight. But if we all liked the same thing, we would all be married to the same woman! |

well i bought one and installed it went on the lake on the 21st loved the down scan imaging it did exactly what i wanted it to do. when my 2d sonar marked a fish i could actually see on the lowrance that it was marking tipped over weeds screen size is small but usable the split screen is to small though i would switch back and forth from chartplotter to sonar. the one problem i did have with the unit is that it wouldnt pick up any satellites i researched it tried all troubleshooting that was out there. called lowrance told em what i did and how i tried to resolve it they told me must be a dead gps antena so im sending back should get it back in 7-20 days at least i hope so |

I had the opportunity to use an Elite 5DSI over the weekend and found it quite nice. I am going to assume it is basically the same as the Elite 4 except for the screen size. I did find that the "simplified" controls on the Elite actually made the screens harder to navigate than those on my LMS.Probably just a matter of getting used to the commands. The downscan feature is nice, but unless I win the lottery, I am stuck with the older unit for now. |

I was doing a search on google and it took me to this thread.. lo and behold I'm already a member and don't have to register. nice. I have the Elite-4 DSI model on my kayak for which I think it's perfect. I can't say I know what a fish looks like yet but it tells me the gps location, temp, depth, speed, and general good view of what's under me. The price was right also. I am using the scupper mount from Lowrance which works great though I still need to watch from ramming into rocks and such. |
