    Is there a difference between saltwater an freshwater outboards. I wanna take my 2000 50hp  merc. to the gulf an do some snook fishing.

    There are maybe some slight differences, which differ from manufacturer. Slight differences being some components have salt guard, which protect against salt corrosion. But as with any outboard, after each use, you should flush the engine. I wouldn't worry about. Take it out and have fun. Just remember to give it a good flush when your back home. From what I've read, if your outboard is made from the 1990's and on, which your is, you don't have to worry. Besides, bass anglers do it all the time, they fish fresh and brackish water without swaping motors, and the gulf has all three, fresh, brackish and salt.
