I live in Pa and fish streams for trout. What are your techniques for using salmon eggs? I have only ever tried them a couple times and caught nothing. I usually use butter worms, meal worms, red worms and spinners. Always hear people catching them on salmon eggs. Also, do they work for other species or just trout?

good question, I bet if you ask 10 trout fishermen you would get 10 different answers. Personally I have not used salomon eggs too much lately but this is what i have had success with. Usually if it is a small stream i will just use a small single or treble hook and thread on one or three salmon eggs respectively. I usually do not use any weight but you can use a couple of small split shot. I usually just toss the bait upstream to the head of a small pool and let it drift through the holes and slower runs keeping the line just tight enough to detect a strike but not too tight that it effects the drift. i always go for a natural drift. also i prefer red eggs rather than the yellow corn flavor or other flavors. a nice ultralight spinning rod and 4lb test works good for this.

Bcain, what kind of waters are you fishing? I use eggs 90 % of the time in river and streams. I can give a few tips as soon as i know the body of water

I haven't had the pleasure of fishing in PA streams. But I have used salmon eggs in North GA streams. When using eggs I typicaly fly fish and tie a nymph off the hook end of the egg. Most of the waters in North GA are stocked. Baby trout learn to eat yellow pellets at the hatcheries. So, since they are looking for a pellet, I use yellow because it looks like they food they first learned to eat. Hope this helps. Wishing you Tight Lines.

Before I got into fly fishing for trout, I used to toss a single salmon egg on a tiny red hook with a small split shot about 18" up from the egg. I could use this method in about any running water here in CA, from small creeks to larger rivers. I would usually toss this set-up in deeper moving water while avoiding deep holes. I toss the rig upstream of boulders and smaller rocks and wait for the ambushing trout to come out and take the egg. For me, it just got too easy to take these stocked rainbows so I switched to fly fishing. I hope this helps.
