I suppose it depends on where you are fishing at. I fish a small community lake (25 acres) in which the state stocks 1000 10-12 inch catfish everyfall.
Most fish run 12-16", but have caught 5-20lbers also.
I just use a spinning reel and a 61/2" to 7' pole with 8lb test line. I tie a swivel on, and then use a 12lb florocarbon leader tied to a #8 or #6 trebble hook.
Believe it or not, the best bait seems to be a piece of hotdog. I use the cheapest jumbo hotdogs made from chicken, ect., then cut about a 3/8" piece off the hotdog. Push the trebble hook through the middle, rotate it when it goes through the piece of hotdog, then gently push the barbs back into the hotdog.
I also use my needle nose pliers to do away with the barbs on the hook. It makes it a lot easier to get the hook out.
If bluegills, ect. knock the bait offn too quick, I do sometimes use a catfish dough bait with the same set up.
Hope this helps a little, and you catch lots!!

You can try doctoring the hot dog chunks by soaking them in un sweetened strawberry or cherry Kool Aid and garlic. If you put a small snap like a Berkley crossloc on the end of your leader you can push a treble hook through the dog and then hook it to your line. This also works with chicken or beef liver.

    Hi fisherman96,

What species of catfish are you going after?  I fish for channel cats of about 2 to 10 pounds, with an occasional blue in the same weight range.   Blue catfish and flathead catfish in some places can reach weights of 60 plus pounds.

Are you bank fishing or fishing from a boat?

Do you need to make long casts, say more than  50 yards?

While fishing for catfish, are there other species available?  In addition to channel cats I also fish for carp, and stripers, many times in the very same waters.

OK, my channel cat rig is a 6'6" Rhino Kevlar medium-heavy baitcast rod with a BPS MCM2000 baitcast reel spooled with 150 yards of Berkley Trilene Big Cat line, 20 pound test. I use 4/0 Gamakatsu Octopus circle hooks. I rig this up slip sinker (1 ounce) style with a 3 way swivel and 2 dropper lines with 2 hooks. This rig has never let me down.

Hope this is of some help for your channel cat rigging questions.

Try using stink bait like sonny's or secret 7 with 10 lb test with at least a 6 1/2 or a 7 foot medium-light spinning rod
