Pictured is a section of one of our favorite Steelhead rivers. Water is ripping through here with several small falls known as Jack, Queen, King. If you look close, you'll see me standing on the bank. The canyon walls are steep and at times the river will cut you off from going any furher. Just below where I'm standing, there is small ledge under the water that runs along the wall on the right. As you work your way down stream, there is a hole in the ledge that is about another 2 feet deeper. You are normally about knee deep and as you step down, you go about waist deep. This was about 10 years ago, and I was working my way down the ledge, got to the step, stepped down, took another step and it went don again while I was expecting to step up. Needless to say, I did a face plant, filled my waders, dropped the small plastic box full of corkies and jigs, but held my rod as I'm being washed downstream toward the waterfall at a pretty brisk pace. I managed to get my feet out in front of me and hit a rock which stood me up just before going into the chute. I got to the side, made my way down to the boys and started fishing again. After about an hour, it just got too cold to stay any more, so I told the boys I was headed to the truck. When questioned, they apparently didn't know of my winter swimming party. I don't go much lower than where I'm standing any longer, having survived my ordeal.
