I'm hoping some knowledgeable fishermen can answer a question for me:  I have an early 1970's Berkley spinning reel.  The bar that is used to attach the reel to a rod broke off.  I would like to know what metal the bar is made of as I would like to weld the bar back on.  I contacted Berkley with this question but the company replied that they have no records of their products made that long ago.  Thanks in advance for your help as I really like this reel.

I would not attempt to weld that you will probley just melt the metel most thoes old reel stems made back then were made with cast metal called Zamac commenley called pot metel. Over a number of years Zamac degrades and weakens and breakes you would be better off get yourself a new reel. I'v had this happen to me also. MCOPELAND1

You could try some filled epoxy like J-B Weld

yes it is posable to weld with the proper equipment and welding rod however I would suggest practicing on simular metal to get use to the heat and look of the metal as its welded ... and to test your weld before tackling your reel stem. good luck heres a tech sheet on how to do it
