Color can make a very big difference. I have had two experiences that have convinced me of that fact. It happened on my very first tournament ever and first trip to a famous lake in Spain, Lake Caspe and on my first ever fishing trip to Canada. We had 6 days of practice and 3 days of tournament fishing. I had tried everything in my tackle box without much success. I tied on Norman Deep Little N, chartruse body with a black back and all of sudden I was catching fish every couple of minutes. My fishing partner only fished with plastics and he dug out a bag of paddle tailed worms the same color as my crank bait and we went to town. On a hunch I tried the same bait in a different color and the bite died immediately. I switched to a fire tiger pattern on a Bomber A and started catching fish so I kept 2 rods set up with the Deep Lil N and the Bomber and those were the 2 baits I used the entire 9 days. It was my first Bass fishing tournament and I came in 27 out of 31. I was happy.
On my first fishing trip to Canada I tied on an orange colored craw fish pattern Rapala Shad Rap crank bait. Basically, that was the only bait I used for 2 weeks of fishing and catching. I tried a few other colors but hands down the orange crawfish Shad Rap was it. On my third and fourth trips a bigger variety of colors worked well but all had a little orange or chartruse on the bait. Sometimes I wish I had a Color-C-lector to help get started in my choice of colors to start with but I go with my gut and normally works out for me.
