I have spent a few days on the Umpqua within the last week. I am glad to report that the salmon fishing is still good near Reedsport. It can be a little hit and miss, but if you put the time in you should not be leaving empty handed. I have caught at least one every trip out so far this year. The only negative is that a large number of the fish in the river this year are jacks. The crabbing has slowed a bit, going from unreal to just good. Still expect a quick limit if you are crabbing out of a boat, but not off of the pier. If you do crab off of the pier, go at night. It will up your odds of getting some nice crab, maybe even a limit. Hope someone who can use this sees it. I'm not so sure if many of us Oregonians are on here.

Thanks for the report.  A lot of jacks is a good thing as they'll go back out and come back with the main run over the next few years.  Most of my crabbing has been done overnight of marina docks and has always been better than during daylight, especiallyht bright sunny days.  I was night wading years ago in the shallow part of the bay.  As soon as my light would hit a crab, they were ducking for cover.  I started using up my bait at night from then on.  Nothing better than pulling up a full pot in the morning and then heading to he river for a limit of Salmon or Steelhead.  Then when the commercial guys start going out in December, I just call it a year as they will get most of the really big boys.  The pots will still fill up, but mostly the smaller males and huge females.  Best to just let the big girls rest.
