Anyone know of any good places to catch Flathead Catfish in southeastern Michigan?  There doesn't seem to be any.

Hi fisherfanatic. They say the flathead's range is from the lower Great Lakes through the Mississippi River watershed to the Gulf states. I can't say I've heard of any flats being caught in southeast MI...but if they are there...rivers will be your best bet.

Check with your State DNR or Fish and Game Dept. All it takes is a phone call or visit their website

There is very little flathead fishing in Michigan. If you go to this DNR page, then click on the flathead catfish link, you will download a pdf map that shows where flatheads have been found.

So yo wanna catch a flathead, eh? If you get to KC in the summer, I can probably help with that goal. If you're a decent swimmer with a lot of courage, I can take you to a place where you can noodle one or two.

My mom lives on a lake and there's a submerged stump with an immense root wad. There's almost always a 8-15 pound flathead sitting in the roots. It's kinda a pet, so if you noodle it ya gotta put it back. There are at least three that hide in those roots. They're all pretty unconcerned with us swimming up to them. Generally, they won't move until you poke them in the side, but you can feed them. Catch a little blue gill or shad and it'll practically take it out of your hand. The weird thing is, when they suck in the bait, they shut their mouths so fast you can actually hear the "thunk" of their jaws closing. It's pretty amazing.

I don't know where you are in southeast Mich but northwest Ohio can't be far. In these parts we have a very respectable flathead population. In mid to late summer they are caught below the dam in Waterville Ohio. That is approximately 30 minutes south  of the Mich. Ohio. state line. Look up Waterville Ohio or Mary Jane Thurston state park. You can also call Maumee tackle and get all the information you need. (419) 893-3474. hope to see you on the MIGHTY MAUMEE! Oh yea come early and join us for the worlds greatest walleye river run. People come from all over it's one hell of a time.
