Hey everyone...every year I usually take on some sort of winter project...This winter, I'm pimping out a classic. An old Penn 710 Greenie. What you basically do to it is called "Hot Rodding" You strip it down, drill holes in the spool and rotor cup, upgrade the drag, and make it bail-less and paint it. It's actually called a Penn-Staal. It's becoming popular among surfcasters in the N.E. I'm going to photo document what I have been doing so far.
I won this greenie on ebay..26 bucks to include shipping...It's pretty decent shape. Here's what they look like when finished. And the green one is the one I'm starting on.

Next was to strip it down..all the parts..and degrease them over night...there was alot of gunk and sand inside this reel.

Then using Aircraft Aluminum Paint Remover, I stripped all the green paint. That old Penn green paint is tough..The only way to remove it is either to sand blast or use Aircraft. The average paint remover will not remove that paint...Use caution when handling this paint remover..Toxic!

The next step is prep for drilling...I made a template of the wholes where I will cut out the rotor and spool. After that, I'm going to sand and polish to a shine the side plate and medallion. That's going to stay polished. The round template will be for the bottom of the rotor and the bottom ones will be for the sides.

I polished the side plate and brass medallion. I started off using 800 grit sand paper (wet) and worked my way up to 1500 grit. Then with a polishing wheel and compound, I polished it. Mo gave me a hot tip. Final stage to polishing, use peanut butter...It worked great...Thanks Mo!

    Coming along great Vito!
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, if it wasn't for my super smooth carbon drag, my 30 year old Trilene would bust!

Rotor cup is drilled and polished. I used 320 grit sand paper (wet) and worked it up to 1500 grit. Then I hit with the polishing wheel and compound. Finally the peanut butter..

You definately added a bit of "flash and dash" to the reel.

Here it is just about finished. I'm gonna paint the drag knob and handle to match the body ( I wasn't feeling the tri color look). And I made it bailless...pics of those will follow

Does it work being without a bail? I have seen recommend modifications to reels in which the bail was made pretty short to be just an aid to getting the line to the guide (or roller), but never torally without a bail.

    Looks good.

Going bailless is a modification popular with surf fishermen. That PUM(manual pickup) that Vito installed on his Greenie is actually a NOS part from Mitchell. All you do is manually put the line onto the roller with your finger, instead of the bail doing it for you. The premise is that sometimes while casting large plugs in the surf, the bail will fly shut and snap the line...this mod corrects that...and looks cool...hee hee. Vito's project inspired me...so I picked up a PUM for my Mitchell 406...may have to put this old gal on a rod and do a test drive.

Thanks AZ...Here are a few reel companies that make bailless reels. www.zeebaas.com and www.vanstaal.com Bailless reels are very popular among surf fishermen. The idea behind it is not having the bail slam shut on a cast, losing your lure. Surf fishermen often cast heavy lures, having the bail close on you in mid cast will almost certainly end up in a lost lure. Also, the holes in the rotor have a purpose. Actually two. One it makes the reel lighter and two, if it gets dunked in the surf, all the salt and sand will drain out. Maybe three...It looks bad azz too...

Thanks for looking at my thread Shlep...Just so you know and understand..AZAllen seemed to be unsure of a bailless reel. Van Staal and Zee Baas are the only two companies that I know of that make them. I seriously doubt they need free advertising. But, if your interested...I can make you one. Special Shlep price...Too low to advertise, e-mail for price. Thanks again, Shlep.
Oh, BTW...this reel will look really good next to that tackle box of yours...Tackle box and reel sporting...doesn't get any better than that, huh Shlep?
