One of my goals for this upcoming year is to catch a Longnose Gar.  Do any of you know of any good places to catch them in southeast Michigan?  If so, what should I use?

I didn't check but I think Michigan is out of that species range. Check with your game and fish department and also do a websearch on Longnose gar to find out where your best chances are.

I saw one last year in northern Michigan, so they definitely aren't out of range.  The state website is next to useless.

looked at the master angler list for michigan listed two state records for long nose gar Lake: Williamsville in livingston county and the portage river in Jackson county
also came accrossed a fishing report which said the thornapple river system around the ada dam south western Michigan some were caught.

as for gear a weightless hook&bobber rig with at least a 12" steel leader or wire fished with shine or a top water single hook top water bait

    good luck

I've lived in Michigan my entire life and have only seen one gar. My Brother in law caught it while we were bluegill fishing about 35 or 40 years ago on a small lake near Dexter.

Here's a link you might find helpful: http://www.garfishing.com/mi.html

Well, I'll be darned, always thought of them a "Southern" species. Might be they are rare in Michigan and often considered a trash fish, that gar website might have more along that line. Fish such as gar are sometimes targeted for removal because they eat "good" fish.

If you're surprised we've got Gar in Michigan, you'd never believe what they catch in the Detroit River! LOL
