slammed the walleye here until the last thaw caught about 130 fish in 2 days. probably had 5-6 limits of keepers if we would have kept them. The river is just about frozen safe again but the water flowing like chocolate milk hopefully this will subside in the next few days. The guys on the saginaw bay have been doing well but the cracks are very hazardous out there right now there have been several sleds and snow machines to go through the ice. If you venture out on the bay be very careful a lot of the cracks have been flowing water from the rivers pushing water into the bay. The wind has been opening and closing cracks by the hour.

just talked to a guy who tried the river and he said the water is still running like chocolate milk they opened the dams in midland again. There were several fishermen rescued on the bay yesterday also. The nirth east wind was blowing water under the ice and the cracks were opening up. There are numerous cracks and the snow is making them harder to judge if they are safe to cross.

I've always wanted to try the 'eyes through the ice up there, but I don't want to join the polar bear club to do it! With warm weather forecast the next few days it seems this will stay on my bucket list for at least one more year.
What were you catching them on, Jwandzel?

Yeah there have been a few guys on the ice the last few days but the fishing has been poor at the best. The last thaw piled the ice up real bad making it hard to land fish when you do catch them because of jagged ice pile up under the surface. Guys have said they are walking on 24" of ice in one place and 2" a few steps away. There have been numerous guys plucked out of the water on the Saginaw Bay the last few days by the coast guard. The latest was last evening about 3 miles out when a crack opened up to about 40' and two boys and two men were trapped out there. The youngsters fell into the water and they camped out into a shanty until they were rescued. The recent snow o we received has made the bay unsafe and unpredictable. With gale force winds predicted for today the bay is a good place to stay away from. Yesterday alone there were 8-10 guys that went through from what I heard.

One guy through the ice just north of the zilwaukee bridge got out on his own the ice there is not safe. lots of guys fishing north of the idependence bridge in Bay City catching lots of hogs. Ice is much better and less current there. Not sure what the rain and runoff from it are going to do though.

A friend of mine bought an airboat last year and worked on it for quite a while. He was up there last weekend and picked up some nice fish jigging Rapalas.
I saw a video of their trip out - it didn't look like anything I'd ever like to do!

haven't been on in a while the fishing has been fantastic in the river many limits eye's from 14-29 inches. I know 14" isn't legal but that's the size range we've been catching. The Saginaw bay is done for the season no more ice safe enough to fish on. there have been several guys rescues the last few days and one died in a air boat accident. The boats have been on the river the in force and the launches have been packed to capacity. two more days to fish until it closes.
