I was hoping to try some striper fishing this spring for the first time. Anyone have any advise on what I should try bait/ lure wise and locations. I do have a 23 foot boat so it does matter if its shore fishing or boat fishing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

As far as bait goes...Here in NY, the #1 bait for Striped Bass is Menhaden aka "Bunker". If you can catch them by cast netting or snagging, rig them live...It's called live lining. Or you can chunk them. Other good baits are Clams, Blood Worms, Sand Worms, Eels. As for artificial baits...there are so many...can't go wrong with a buck tail tipped with Uncle Josh pork rind, big swimbaits, crank baits, spoons, diamond jigs, top water plugs. You can troll parachute rigs, tubes, bunker spoons...The list goes on an on.

Awesome I will give them a try. Thanks. I just have to find a fishing spot down here now. In your opinion which of those bait/ lure choices work best.

To be honest...nothing beats live bait...granted there are days when live bait doesn't work...but for the most part live bait is the way to go. If you can get live bunker...that will make a difference. Artificials, I would have a rod rigged with a bucktail..depending on current and wind...anywhere from 1oz to 5oz tipped with Uncle Josh Pork Rind...and work the spot.

I was told to use chicken liver. Ever heard of that? I know chicken liver works on catfish and the catch crabs.

I know chicken works good for trapping crabs but I have never heard of anyone fishing with it, but hey can't hurt to try. Got nothing to loose. I will have to try it when I make it out there and let you guys know how it goes.
