Has anyone been to the Maumee River yet this year?

The Maumee River has been running pretty high and very muddy. Here is a link to the bait shop in Maumee that keeps track of the water levels and temps plus a daily fishing report.

    Hope these help.

Hi wheelzup, welcome to the Club and thanks for your reply.

I've been watching this same website for a couple weeks. With the cold temps and snow again this morning I'm sure it will put the brakes on the Spring run - at least for a few more days. It's got to warm up eventually!

    Hi capnklumpp,

I've been around NAFC since 1995 as a Life Member. Being disabled most of the guys here could care less. It is all about the sport we enjoy fishing. Despite my chair I have found plenty of places to go fishing. I've even been out with Capt. Jerry Taylor when he had his old boat. He was part of an event called Fishing Has No Boundaries and that's how we met.

We have our own boat a 20' Grady White Fisherman that my dad made some modifications to so I can go out on Lake Erie if it's not to rough. Plus I've been out on the Irish Drifter every summer for the last 6 years. A group of us in wheelchairs go out on it for yellow perch in late August. They have set the boat up so we can roll right on and off when we get back in. There are a bunch of pics at www.spinalrap.com of us with some of the fish we've caught.

I'd love to be able to fish the Maumee river but it's usually too muddy for me to get anywhere near it during the spring. Muddy banks and wheelchairs don't mix very well But I still enjoy getting out when I can even if I don't catch much of anything.

    Hi Hank,

You're absolutely right about this Club - the whole point is to share information, try to help each other if we can, and and have a little fun while doing so.

I checked out the photos of your trip last summer, it looks like you had a great time! I'm glad to hear you are able to enjoy Lake Erie on occasion, it can be a lot of fun out there if the weather is good. If it's not good, this may be an option - there are always folks fishing at the old State launch at Bolles Harbor in Monroe, MI - the one on the South side of the channel past Trout's Yacht Basin. I believe it is called "Hoffman Memorial." I've seen some pretty nice fish taken from there - everything from bass and perch to bluegills and drum. Access is extremely easy from the parking lot, and you shouldn't have a problem getting up to the water in your chair. Sidewalks lead from the parking lot to the seawall. There are handrails along the edge, and they make pretty good rod holders if the fishing is slow! There are two bait shops within 1/2 mile of the old launch. They always have worms and crawlers and almost always have minnows. I would suggest Matthew's Bait shop, which is located on the right side of the road just before you enter Bolles Harbor. Access is very easy and the owners (Frank and Alyce) are a trip!

Thanks so much for your response. It had more of an impact than you could have possibly known when you wrote it. I have a Nephew that is also confined to a chair. A few years ago I tried to find a way to get him out on the water. He's a pretty big guy, and I couldn't find a way to make it happen. Your reference to the Irish Drifter had me checking out their website, and it sure looks like this would be a solution!

Thanks again, and good luck fishing this year!

    Bill

Looks like it will be pretty chilly the next 10 days. Thta won't help the walleye run. It has been years since I fished the Maumee. I had major ankle surgery in 2009, leaving 3 screws and a pin in my left foot. There is not much strenght or stability in it any more. walking out in that current/ stumbling about on those rocks I am afraid I would be taking a cold bath before I ever got a line in the water.

    Bill,

All you have to do is call ahead and give them a day that you wish to take your nephew out and they'll get it set up. Sometimes they'll just have a bunch of guys there to do some lifting unless he uses a power chair. There are a lot of piers along the shoreline here in Ohio that make for good safe access. There is even a book http://www.amazon.com/Ohios-Lake-Pu...EXP3O8MGUF

In fact my favorite is the Mazurik Access down near Marblehead. It goes out into the lake and has several large concrete pads that anyone can fish from but they have the rail lowered in certain spots to make casting and landing fish easier. When there's a nice breeze it isn't real hot out there either. I've caught bluegills up to 10 inches, catfish up to 18 inches, a few yellow perch a smallmouth bass and of course drum. I hooked something two years ago that made me think I was snagged on the bottom but after one long pull it started swimming off to my left. I was using Fireline and a medium 7' spinning rod with an electric spinning reel that the engineering students at UT put together as their senior class project, the thing is a beast. I even used it out in the Gulf of Mexico. Any way whatever it was that I hooked actually pulled a stainless steel ball bearing swivel apart. If I had to guess it could have been a big carp, catfish or possibly a Lake Sturgeon. We were told that the DNR would sometimes find them in their nets in that area. If it was a walleye it would have had to be huge and I know from doing some reading that in the late fall and early winter that some really large eye's can be caught after dark as they are drawn in to feed on baitfish that are attracted by the lights.

I have gone down a couple times (years ago) in the current. It happens really fast. It is usually when you are walking out to you spot or on the way back in. Better on the way back in. At least then you can warm back up in the car. If you do it in the beginning Which I did once. You are cold and wet the whole day you stay out fishing.

I went yesterday, the 7th, I try to make to the maumee at least twice a year during the run I got hooked ever since I was going to college at UT and went with college buddies, now I live 3 hours away so can only get up there couple times if I lived nearby I would be there all the time. But enough about that and on with my report. Overall it seems that there are good catches going on right now, I got there around 11 am and many anglers were coming back with multiple fish. I did not have any luck and it seemed by watching around that not many others were either while I was there so maybe the bite slowed down and. I should have went earlier in the morning. But I still had a good time, anytime I can get on the water is a good relaxing time for me. The river was packed with anglers shoulder to shoulder I fished out of bluegrass island, seems like it gets more and ,ore crowded every year, my only complaint is this time there were some rude anglers there. I went to the shoreline to re tie a rig up since it is easier to do then doing it in the water and these 2 guys seen where I was fishing at and that I was re rigging and planning on returning very shortly ad they walked right past me into where I was fishing now that really made me mad isn't there any common courtesy anymore I mean how dang rude can one be? Also I tangled lines with a guy next to me and the guy just snipped my line instead of trying to untangle it without asking me I would have been ok with it but ask me first! We all know before heading out you will need plenty of tackle but have some courtesy out there we are all trying to achieve the same goal no need to be an idiot out there!

It has been years since I fished the maumee. But what I do remember is to aviod fishing weekends if possible. We would take a vacation day and get there before sunrise. There was a bite first thing in the morning and a lull in the action. We also found that there was a pretty good late afternoon bite. So we would leave work at noon drive 2 1/2 hours and by then the crowd was thinned out but the fish were starting to bite again. We did pretty well doing this. Like I said though, that was years ago and it may have all changed now. Well good luck next time.
