Do You Have What It Takes?

Oct 21

The North American Fishing Club was barely a year old when I joined the North American Fisherman magazine editorial staff in 1989. I was a diehard angler and a veteran magazine editor, writing about another lifestyle that’s dear to my heart—dairy farming. Yeah, go figure!

Anyway, because I was in the right place, with the right creds, at the right time, I got the job offer about four hours after my interview. I couldn’t believe it. I was finally going to do what I’d been dreaming about since I was 11 years old. Write, talk, read and live fishing every day—and pull a paycheck besides.

Those kinds of chances don’t come often. Just ask the 87 guys I know who would do anything short of murder (Frankly, there’s 4 of ‘em I’m not sure would stop at that) to get the opportunity I got 20-some years ago.

If you’ve got a similar dream, I hope you’ve heard of the “So, You Think You Can Fish?" video contest we’ve been running on our Facebook Fan Page for the past couple of months. It’s your big chance to show you’ve got what it takes to fish—on camera! Just send us a home video of yourself on your favorite water; it doesn’t have to be highly polished or highly produced. Just exciting, funny or informational (all three, if possible).

Jason Aleshire’s clip is a great example. It’s definitely exciting, but then, monster flatheads always are. The entry from a young man who calls himself Carpmanjake is another good one. This kid knows fishing, and has the talent to impart his knowledge to the viewer.

These are just a couple videos we’ve received. There’s plenty of room for more, and the prizes offered are well worth the time it takes to enter. They include video cameras, lure packs, fishing jerseys, NAFC Life Memberships (transferable) and more. The Grand Prize winner might even get an invitation to join the NAFC’s website video pro staff. See the “Official Rules” for details. Sorry, this dream doesn’t come with a paycheck, though.

Like I said, the contest has been up for a while, but you’ve still got some time to get your entry to us. Until November 4, to be exact. If you’ve always wanted to be a “fishing pro,” submit your vid now

So, are you in?
