This New Reel Won’t Bankrupt You (And Might Get You A Free Hoodie)

Nov 28

The past few years have seen some stellar high-end baitcasting reels come out, and by the grace of God I’ve gotten to try many of them—Abu’s Revo MGX, Quantum’s ExoDaiwa’s TD Zillion and Shimano’s Core MG, to name just a few.

And let me tell you, they’re sweet. I mean Ridiculous.

But let’s be fair. At $250 to $400, they ought to be.

The reels that impress me almost as much are those that fool me into thinking they’re as pricey as those others, but actually sell for a fraction of the cost.

The folks at Abu Garcia just sent me a field-test sample of a new reel that did exactly that—the Pro Max. The moment I picked it up, I was certain I was holding a baitcaster that would go for at least twice its $79.95 price tag.

Granted, I haven’t had a chance to put it to the test on the water yet, but my first impressions say a lot. It’s smooth, fast, has an ultra-low profile and gives that crisp, tight, machined feel that usually separates high-dollar reels from budget-priced ones.

This video explains the nuts-and-bolts behind the Pro Max better than I can here. Plus, you get the challenge of navigating Australian-born product manager Andrew Wheeler’s thick accent.

For 80 bucks, you can’t go wrong here, especially because if you buy a Pro Max by Dec. 31, 2011, you’ll get a free Abu Garcia hooded sweatshirt.
