VIDEO: Can Facebook Help You Catch Fish?

Dec 01

Facebook is great for reuniting with old friends, seeing who old flames married and filling in your parents and your kid’s latest cute feat, but what use is Facebook to a fisherman?

Facebook can’t help us catch fish can it?

That’s the challenge “North American Fisherman TV” host Steve Pennaz extended to North American Fishing Club Social Media Editor Greg Huff this summer.

One week – and 50 fish later – he had his answer:

Yes. Facebook can help you catch fish.

The NAFC Facebook community makes over 40 recommendations for Steve and Greg's NAF-TV episode
A day prior to filming an episode of NAF-TV, Greg posted on the Fishing Club’s Facebook page details about the 300-acre lake he and Steve would be fishing for the first time – details like a contour map, water quality, likely water temp, bottom content and available cover and structure. In the post, Greg asked the Club’s Facebook community to analyze the data and suggest a pattern that would load Steve’s boat with bass.

Feedback from NAFC’s Facebook Community was fast and full of detail. While specifics varied, the majority of Fishing Club fans suggested starting shallow with fast-moving reaction baits, and then moving deeper if need be to find bites, targeting deeper weedlines with Texas-rigged worms or creature baits or wacky-rigged soft stickbaits.

Steve and Greg began building a pattern on those suggestions – as the TV cameras rolled – and soon began setting hooks on chunky Minnesota largemouth. At day’s end, Steve estimated they had caught 40 or more, including one over 5 pounds – pretty decent for the upper Midwest Here’s a sneak-peek video Greg shot on a smart-phone of his day on the water with Steve. The full “North American Fisherman TV” episode they shot will begin airing Jan. 9 on NBC Sports Outdoors (formerly the Versus Channel), so stay tuned.

And stay tuned to NAFC’s Facebook page. Visit often for new content, contests and conversation. While it might not be able to help you pattern a lake in near real time, it’s updated multiple times daily with links to fresh Fishing Club content – articles, blogs and videos full of fishing tips you can use to catch more fish.

With 50,000-plus fans, NAFC’s Facebook community is like a virtual bait shop where you can always come to learn what every angler wants to know – what’s working now.

Come to learn. Come to teach. Come to show off your braggin’ board bigguns! Come for a chance to WIN PRIZES worth 100s of dollars from top brands like Berkley, Abu Garcia, Frabill, MarCum, Panther Martin and Cabelas.

We promise to make sure there’s always a lot to like.

Tight lines,

Greg
