Must-See Alabama Rig Options

Jan 09

By now, the story of the Alabama Rig is well known, but I’ll share a bit of background for the benefit of those who been living in a tree stand the last several weeks.

PRADCO's YUMbrella Foxy Lady

In October, bass pro Paul Elias blew away the field during an FLW Tour Open event on Alabama’s Lake Guntersville to win first place and a check for $100,000. Elias was throwing a weird-looking rig that is essentially a freshwater version of the Umbrella Rig so familiar to striper anglers. What’s unique about the rig Elias was throwing is it’s not only castable, it puts multiple lures in the waters at one time, and yes, he did catch multiple fish on a single cast during the event.

Within weeks, anglers using The Alabama Rig won two more tournaments, one a FLW Everstart event on Kentucky Lake, another during a FLW BFL event.

And that’s when the fishing world went crazy about The Alabama Rig.

The Alabama Rig works because it does a phenomenal job mimicking a small school of bait, especially shad, a key forage species in many bass waters. The most popular rig to date features a jighead tipped with a soft plastic swimbait on each of the rig’s five flexible bars. Because the rig contains multiple baits, it’s not legal to fish is several states, but it is legal in Alabama. Most fish the rig on an 8-foot, heavy-action baitcasting rod and 80- to 100-pound braid.

Things have moved quickly in the past several weeks, as the fishing industry scrambled to meet the explosive demand for the product. Within weeks, rig developer Andy Poss, licensed the rig to Mann’s Bait Company, while other lure manufacturers rapidly developed their own versions of the patent-pending design. In fact, in just the past couple days, both PRADCO and Trophy Technologies shared sneak peaks at their new rigs.

Trophy Technologies' Charlie Walker Rig
PRADCO is calling their rig the YUMbrella. It’s a well-built unit featuring five stainless steel arms that will allow angler to up to five baits at a time, to simulate a small school of bait. It features 45-pound-strength snaps and 75-pound-strength swivels, and comes in two Tennessee Shad and Foxy Lady. Tennessee Shad is a realistic shad pattern with white sides, shad dot, gill stripe and a touch of red under the mouth and tail. The Foxy Lady features a chartreuse base with dark back, shad dot and a splash of orange on the belly. Both patterns feature red 3D eyes.

The YUMbrella has a suggested retail of $14.99. For more information go to www.lurenet.com

The Charlie Walker Rig from Trophy Technologies is another rig option that features three arms, a tin head to keep weight down and increase sensitivity, and ball bearing swivels. MSRP is $20. No additional information is available on the product right now; I’ll forward when available.

I’m certain other companies will be moving into this space and will share information as it becomes known.-- Steve

In my arsenal collection of everything known to man kind that i use while relax fishing and scouting the rivers and lakes in and around Arkansas.I often use the Umbrella Rig to cutout the time that it takes to locate the
fish and whats on their menu for paticular day.Quite often i use this rig to entertain my clients when the fishing gets slow. They can not believe this thing exists, they thing this is a joke.I laugh along with them,i continue to bait this thing up with any number of combutions of lures depending on the fishing conditions of the day, there is so many mind boggling ways to temp the fish. See,fishing doesn't have to be boring for first timers and even the pros. Now down to hard facts,i use the Umbrella Rig on many occasions to cover as much water as i can and to use as many lure types i can use in a short possible time.I have clients schedleled and need to be ready for them and take them straight to the fish.I have five of these Umbrella Rigs, two are spares the remaining three,i use for scout fishing, all baited up ready to go.As i fish and can't get a hit,i put the rod down, grab another rod with the Umbrella Rig fish with it' i get no bites, then i grab the last rod and continue fishing.Usually i don't have to use the last rod,i get bit before this happens.I already stated i have an arsenal of lures, now you know why.I was supprised it took so long for a manufacturer to come out with a simular design.Pradco is an outstanding company,i have some of their lure products also. This Yumbrella Foxy Lady design is setup to look a small bait fish trying to escape, sometimes this is what turns on a bucketmouth. As a bassing guide i'll tell the my clients to check online for this rig.

No wonder the manufactures are jumping on this, at 15 to 20 bucks this must be one of the highest profit margin items they have.

I don't think this rig is legal in Indiana based on the definitions in the fishing regs, but I haven't asked the DNR yet.

I have bought 3 different versions of this rig, including the original Alabama Rig. At a local fishing show, I purchase a rig with a very lite weight head on the rig. this is suppose to change the characteristics of how the rig works. (someone has been doing their homework) Also I was informed that you will have to spend some time setting up these rigs. You want to make sure the lures you attach swim correctly as you pull it through the water. Can't wait to try these out. Happy Hookin Everyone!

I have seen these rigs before, never seen one operated but it would seem obvious that the more a luring baits one can get out at one time makes much sense. Though there is much hub-bub over using such out fits during professional competitions. Here is an excerpt from B.A.S.S. communication too the powers that be over this rig being used:

B.A.S.S., upon the recommendation of its Bassmaster Elite Series Rules Committee, has amended its tournament rules to limit anglers competing in the Bassmaster Classic and Bassmaster Elite Series to the use of a single lure during practice and competition.
The rule change, which does not apply to Bassmaster Open, B.A.S.S. Federation Nation, College B.A.S.S. and other events, clarifies the intent of long-standing rules permitting only one rod, one reel and one cast at a time. No longer permitted are double soft jerkbait rigs, drop shot rigs with jigs used as weights, double topwater setups and other multi-lure rigs, such as “umbrella rigs.”
The change becomes effective Feb. 1 and includes the upcoming Bassmaster Classic at Shreveport-Bossier City, La., Feb. 24-26.

SO, it would seem that if you are just a regular Joe using the Alabama rig for leisure time, it may be alright. But to use this type of rig, during competitive fishing events has the judges thinking there is an unfair advantage and wish to banned this rig from being used.

I went to Gander Mountain, bought all the necessary parts, including paint, and for $60.00 I got everything I needed to make (10) ten rigs, plus it only took 5 min for ea to put together, the longest time was for the paint to cure.
