It’s been 40 years since fishing legends Ron and Al Lindner changed the way anglers thought about and approached the sport of fishing. Through their “Fish + Location + Presentation = Success" system, they encouraged fishermen to think scientifically and make intelligent decisions based on the season, current weather and water conditions, and fish behavior and attitude. And the masses of fishermen, who up ‘til then had relied more on luck than skill to fill their stringers and wire-mesh baskets, were thankful.
I fully recognize the valuable contributions that fishing pioneers like Buck Perry and others made to the sport. They got the ball rolling. But by using magazine articles and television shows to explain how understanding things like “calendar periods,” and “lake classifications” would greatly improve fishing success, the Lindners were the first to successfully change the thinking of millions of anglers who were searching for a better way to fish.
Some months ago, in a conversation with Ron, he spoke of how much things have changed since the old days. So, when he asked us (Steve Pennaz, Ryan Gilligan, Jim Edlund, Greg Huff and me) to join him, Al, James and Dave Csanda in going back to the beginning to re-examine, review and update pretty much everything we know about fishing. Well … he didn’t have to ask twice!
In the February issue of North American Fisherman, we are thrilled to begin a multi-part series of articles that introduces the “Fish Response System,” a product from the collective thinking of a group of guys with an accumulation of hundreds of years of fishing experience.
In the video below, Ron Lindner and Dave Csanda discuss the roots of the original system and previews the forthcoming FRS collaboration with NAFC. (Note: The blog text continues below the video player)
The series not only reviews what we know, it brings that knowledge up to date by examining how things like exotic species, changing weather patterns, and even modern fishing and management practices have altered what once might have been true.
In addition, the NAFC and Lindner Media websites will feature additional information, as well as a glossary of terms that will grow as the series progresses. A designated Fish Response System (FRS) area on fishingclub.com will launch February 1, 2012.
We’re excited to present the Fish Response System to you, and are eager to hear your feedback. Let us know what you think.
