Born and raised in Nebraska, I did not inherit the ice-fishing gene possessed by my peers in my adopted home of Minnesota. And when I see videos like this, you'll understand why fishing on the "hard water" still makes me a little nervous!

Todd Carlson, a friend of Jim's, shot the dramatic footage on a smartphone last winter when Jim was fishing with clients near Lake Superior's Apostle Islands, close to Chequamegon Bay.
"This occurred on a calm day here in the Islands, but it was windy on the north shore and [this] is what happens," Jim explained.
Wind on the far shore can create waves under the ice, Jim explained, which can travel quite a distance under the ice sheet, lifting it significantly -- as this video exemplifies. Watch how far the fisherman's head bobs above the island on the horizon.
Look dangerous? It is.
"That is why we left right away," Jim said. "Waves will, and do, break up the ice. That ice was gone the next day."
So be careful out there, ice anglers!
