7 Must Read Wilderness Fishing Blogs

Oct 18

On a cold, dark, rainy October morning here in Wisconsin, I find myself with a hot cup of coffee watching the world go by in what is supposed to be a “sunny” sunroom. Completely at peace, I am simultaneously drawn from my reading chair to my computer like a sleep walker headed toward a refrigerator. I recognize the feeling drawing me from the comforts of my reading chair because it happens every year.

What I’m feeling is the ending this year’s open water fishing season and beginning of the next..  Each year, the focal point of my fishing adventures is always a trip to Canada and this October morning I am reminiscing about my last trip and beginning to think about the next.

I start by visiting my favorite blogs written by Canadian lodge and flying service owners, most of whom I’ve known for many years in the wilderness tourism business – but who I’ve gotten to know much better by reading their blogs.  In the same way you are getting to know me through this blog.

As I catch up on my reading, it occurred to me that you might enjoy these blogs as much as I do, because they provide a window into fascinating lives deep in the Canadian bush. So here are my favorites including a brief description.

Electric Beaver – This blog is from the owner of Vermilion Bay Lodge and will keep you smiling. His paper newsletter was titled The Beaver, so when he moved it to a blog he renamed it The Electric Beaver.

Northern Saskatchewan Bush Pilot – This is an unvarnished look at the life of a bush pilot and a rare look into the daily happenings of a person totally comfortable in the wild of Canada.

Churchill Manitoba lodge owner – From this famous wilderness town comes a two generation lodge owner with a past that includes being mayor of Churchill and being featured on Ice Pilots.

Viking Island – this Viking family, the Carlson’s, document their life in Red Lake Ontario, it makes you want to quit your job and move to the end of the road.

Inuvit, NWT – talk about end of the road – this blog is about life in an arctic village at the end of a river deep inside the Arctic Circle. Done mostly through photos it is captivating and eloquent. Not a lot of fishing here, but fascinating for anyone who loves the outdoors.

Bow Narrows – what I like most about this blog is you never know what will be posted next…has everything from a jumping mouse to measuring the height of their lemon meringue pie. It is always worth the read.

Ignace Outpost – what I like most about this blog from Brad and Karen Greaves is you quickly learn he and his family love what they do whether they are scrubbing showers, de-icing their planes, or hosting anglers in their piece of fishing paradise.

If you have a favorite blog, in addition to mine, please post it in a comment for all of us to follow.
