Meet new NAFC blogger Jeff Little
Jeff Little of Blue Ridge Kayak Fishing LLC began teaching anglers how to fish out of kayaks before most had heard the term "kayak fishing." Earning instructor certification from the American Canoe Association, he started his business to teach river kayak fishing skills such as stealth approaches, pattern development, running whitewater, paddling technique, river safety, and trip planning. He taught hundreds of students in one to one and group trips on Mid Atlantic rivers such as the Potomac, Rappahannock, Susquehanna and Shenandoah. To reach a greater student base, he turned to video. His first DVD River Kayak Fishing Skills covers all aspects of his on the water lesson plan. The River Smallmouth Seasonal Tactics series that followed provide details that will grow any river angler’s pattern and presentation set. Although smallmouth capture his attention more than other species, he's a student of all riverine fisheries, from tidal largemouth to river musky and walleye to spring time striped bass runs on tidal flows. A year ago, my buddy Juan and I were looking at a rough weekend forecast. We discussed our potential fishing plans on the phone: "You think the river's gonna lock up by Saturday?" I prodded my fellow river addict friend. "I've saw the east shore getting slushy yesterday, but the west side was clean." We planned on meeting at an informal access at 7 a.m. A snow storm that send trucks slamming into guard rails caused both of us to be a little bit late. But we made it. We fished hard for hours without a bite. Then it came, the one bite that makes it all worthwhile. One bite made the difference between a skunk trip and one of the most memorable trips ever.
