Atlantic salmon are the ultimate gamefish. Their leaping ability is legendary and, even though they do not feed once they enter their spawning streams, they readily take flies, both wet and dry. In fact, fly fishing is the only method permitted on the designated salmon rivers along the North Atlantic coast. Most anglers use 8 - or 9 - weight fly rods and traditional Atlantic salmon fly patterns.

On bright days, use light - colored flies like the Green Highlander or Silver Rat; on dark days, dark flies like the Black Dose or Black Rat. Carry a selection of flies in sizes 6 to 2/0.
