Tommy Skarlis’s penchant for big baits doesn’t end with jigs and rigs. He also trolls with sizable crankbaits, including Lindy’s 2 7/8-inch Shadling. “This new shad bait is entirely different bait than the old Lindy Shadling,” he says. “It’s got nice side-to-side roll, it comes in holographic finishes, and it rattles.” The Shadling also comes in a smaller 2 7/16-inch No. 5 size, which Skarlis will troll in clear water and when walleye key on small baitfish. However, in murky water and when there is a forage explosion of baitfish, the bigger No. 7 Shadling draws more strikes. “I go with silver and bright colors in clean water and gold or dark colors in dirty water,” he says.
